MR. ROBERT KIRKPATRICK Another link with the early days of Palmerston North and district was severed with the death recently of Mr. Robert Kirkpatrick, aged 87 years. Boru in Tobermory, lslo of Mull, Scotland, deceased worked his way out to New Zealand as a young man and was engaged on. the sailing vessels trading m New Zealand ports until December, 1376, when ho married Jane iteuecca Tncklooank. lie then toon up land at Stoney Creek (now Whakarongo; about live miles from Palmerston Norm and felled the bush on most of au area of 136 acres. He reared a family of lour sous and a daughter. Retiring from farm life in August, 1910, ho made his residence in Limbnck street, Palmerston North. His wife predeceased him in September, 1927, and his only dauguter, Isabella, in November, 1927. He is survived by his four sous, Colin (Taihape), Robert and Charles (Palmerston North) and Allan (Wellington). It can be truly stated that ho was one of the pioneers of Manawatu and was highly respected throughout his long life.
