GALLOPS AT WANGANUI REHEARSAL AND ICING Two interesting gallops by Wanganui candidates for Ellerslie and Feilding were features of Tuesday morning’s track operations at Wanganui which were carried out under ideal weather conditions. The gallops were done on the outside of the course proper, with the trestles out about 15ft. Rehearsal pleased in leaving four furlongs behind in 49 2-556 c., running the reverse way from the quartermile peg to the six furlongs in company with Minga. The latter had F. Latham in the saddle, and W. Rayner was on the Limond colt, who had tho outside running, and therefore covered extra ground. This was the first time Rehearsal had done any fast work the reverse way, and at one stage he displayed a tendency to run wide, but he kept a straight course over the final stages, most of the way uphill. Scarf Dance (W. Rayner) and Icing (F. Latham) also went the reverse way, covering six furlongs in a tick over lmin. 16sec. Icing had an advantage over her companion at the end of this task, but both went well. Rehearsal and Icing leave on Monday for Ellerslie, where they are to be ridden in their classic engagements by P. Atkins. Accompanying them on the train journey north will be two members of the Fordell team of D. T. Marks, Smoke Screen and Russian Ballet, and the Fordell pair will be ridden by W. J. Broughton. Minga and Scarf Dance are to do their Easter racing at Feilding, where the first-named filly is to run in the Taonui Nursery Handicap, in which she has been asked to concede Ecstatic 41b. SCRATCHED FOR ELLERSLIE King Rey was scratched at 2.30 p.mon Monday for all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting. RIVERTON ACCEPTANCES P*r Press Association. We are too fond of the American people to make an international issue of the matter. So ‘Derby’ or ‘Darby’—have it your own way.” J RACING FIXTURES < April 8,9: Wnangarei R.C. DANNEVIRKE RACING CLUB The above club’s meeting takes place on April 29 and 30, not the 20th and 30th as previously stated by this paper. Nominations for all events close with the race secretary (Mr W. A. Lyon) at 8 o’clock next Monday evening. HENRY ARMSTRONG WILL NEVER BE “BROKE.” Henry Armstrong, world featherweight champion, will never be broke like most boxers are at the finish of their career. They won’t have to hold benefits for Henry or his family, because this amazing negro champion already has more than 50,000 dollars sewed up in annuities, and has started on his second 50,000 dollars, which will give him an income for life that will keep him in bettor than comfort. The hurricane fighter’s wife allows him only ten dollars a week pocket money, and it’s just too bad if the champion exceeds his allowance —-she won’t give him any more. Armstrong was dubious about taking out annuity policies, so his manager took him down to a negro fight club in Harlem and pointed out former champions who were down and out and working for almost nothing to get enough to eat. He pointed out Sam Langford, Joe Gans, Joo Walcott, and others, who are now broko to the world and working as janitors or waiters. Some are just beggars. Henry didn’t hesitate after that, and signed up for a policy the next day. ASHBURTON TROTTING ACCEPTORS ASHBURTON, April 5.
