National Athletic Champion
NOW RESIDING IN PALMERSTON NORTH. A notablo acquisition to atnletics in Manawatu is Mr Graham Quinn, the Dominion sprint champion, who has been transferred by the State Advances Corporation to Palmerston North. Originally a resident of Gisborne, Mr Quinn has been stationed some short time in Wellington, but he will now remain permanently in Palmerston North, it is hoped. Mr Quinn represented New Zealand in the sprint events at the Empire Games, subsequent to winning trial events held in Wellington. At the national championship meeting at Christchurch on March 14, Mr Quinn defeated Mr W. J. Fitzsimmons, former N.Z. champion, iii both the 100 yards and 220 yards events. He has often recorded even time for the 100 yards and it is the opinion of Mr Alf. Fitch, American athletic coach in Wellington, that under suitable conditions he could do better than even time. Unfortunately the current athletic season has practically drawn to a close and it L not likely that local athletic enthusiasts will have an opportunity of seeing the champion in action this season. Nevertheless, Mr. Quinn will probably run with the Kia Toa Athletic Club next season and by taking part in the meetings do much to encourage athletics in the Manawatu and I artieularly in Palmerston North.
