Athletic Sports at Girls’ High School

LILIAN CHURCHILL SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP MEG SHEPPARD AND JOAN HILL TIE FOR JUNIOR Favoured with ideal weather, the annual athletic sports of the Palmerston North Girls-* High School wore held on the school grounds yesterday afternoon, there being a gratifying number of parents and - supporters present. The senior honours were gained by Lilian Churchill (Rongotea) with 14 points, who received the Palmerston North G.H.S. silver cup. Ailsa Shaw, 10 points, was runner-up.

Meg Sheppard and Joan Hill with 15 points each, shared the junior honours and the Balsillie rose bowl, Isla Carian with six points, being runner-up. The house points were as follow: — Green 92, Purple 91, Brown 75, Blue 6(3, Orange 45, and Red 39. At the conclusion of the sports, the principal, Miss E. E. Stephens asked Colonel J. H. Whyte, member of the Education Board, who was deputising for Mr. M. H. Oram, to present the cups to the senior and junior champions and announce the house points. Miss Stephens also thanked parents, the staff and the pupils for their help and support. Presenting the cups, Colonel Whyte said those at the Girls’ High School were firm believers in sport. He congratulated the winners and added his thanks to the parents and called for three cheers for the staff for their organisation.

Afternoon tea was served by members of the staff and pupils and the classrooms had been transformed into tea-rooms with tables gaily decorated with vases of autumn-tinted marigolds, dahlias, nasturtiums, gaiilardias and antirrhinums.
