Until the village of Turners Hill in Sussex gets Halt traffic signs, a clergyman, whose daughter was knocked down by a car, is doing point duty for childten.

During a seaside gala, a prize was offered to the man who could djg the deepest hole in the sand in a given time. The winner really wasn't in the contest all; he just happened to see his tailor t.trolling in his direction.

VISITS NEW ZEALAND. A distinguished visitor who has been in the Dominion for the past fortnight and who will leave to-day by the Monterey on her return home is Lady Janet Bailey, wife of. Lieutenant-Colonel F. G. G. Bailey and sister of the second Earl of Inchcape. Lady Janet has many interests, chief among which is the work of the Harbour Lights Guild of the Missions to Seamen in England. She is president of the London guild, whose activity is the raising of money for the Missions to Seamen. Lady Janet said that in Australia and New Zealand the members were able to do more practical work, such as helping at the canteens, but with London so far away from , tho part the members had to content themselves with raising money by means of concerts and bazaars and forwarding this to tho Missions to Seamen. Another organisation in which Lady Janet takes an active interest is the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital for women and children, which is staffed and run entirely by women doctors. ‘*l was very interested in the Queen Victoria Hospital, in Melbourne, which is run on similar lines,’’ said Lady Janet. “The Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital is very successfully run, depending entirely on voluntary subscription. There is a minimum charge made to those who are able to pay it, but the majority of the patients are treated free of charge. We are just now erecting a small building as a paying ward, but, as the patients are generally very poor, our idea is to care for them without causing them any worry about payment.” Lady Janet is a member of the managing board of this hospital.
