Gala Day at Northern Croquet Club
Many members participated with great enjoyment in a gala day at Northern Club yesterday, being occupied with a varied programme throughout the day. Progressive croquet was played in the morning, the winners being Mrs. H. Brown (A grade), Mrs. Permain (B grade) and Mrs. J. H. Walker (C grade). Other winners were:— Robbers: Mrs. K. McDonald (A), and Mrs. Reed (B). Ladder; Mrs. J. A. Colquhoun. French: Mrs. T. Simpson. Lucky number: Mrs. Dobson. Afternoon tea made a pleasing break in proceedings, the tables and pavilion being brightly decorated for the occaMrs. H. Brown, vice-president, did the honours and took the opportunity of presenting shoulder-sprays, the artistic work of Mrs. W. M. Tapp, to four members who had achieved distinction in recent croquet fixtures, and offering congratulations. These were Mrs. T. Simpson, who was runner-up in the ladies 7 championship in the Dominion Whittaker Cup at the Dominion tourney; Mrs. L. Wood, runner-up in the Hawke’s Bay open championship; Mrs. Permain, winner of the C handicap singles at the Southland tournev.
Mrs. Brown also complimented Mrs. T. Simpson and Mrs. Connor upon having won the A. and B. silver buttons respectively recently.
On behalf of the new season players, Mrs. Lovelock returned thanks for an e njoyable day and appreciation was also expressed of the generosity of Miss Newman in donating vases to the club.
