Final Trials at Trentham
COURSE PROPER IN DEMAND YESTERDAY
The conditions were favourable at Trentham yesterday, when horses engaged to-morrow were given their final trials. The plough was very fast, but most of the important work was done on the outside of the course proper. Following is i ‘ Rangatira’s 77 comment about the programme:— On the Course Proper.
“Smoke Screen (S. Wilson) showed himself well forward despite his lack of recent racing by beating Whirling (C. Goulsbro) by three lengths over seven furlongs in 1.30 1-5, the last halfmile in 57 3-ssec. The three-year-old gallopod very smoothly all the way. “Silver Ring (Wilson) traversed six furlongs iu 1.19, tho last half-mile in 51 3-ssec. He seemed all right afterwards, but near the finish of his gallop he had his head stretched out as if he might be feeling pain in his joints. “Royal Bachelor (A. Sagar), who looks very well, came up from behind to finish a couple of lengths ahead of Alunga (H. N. Wiggins) after five furlongs in 1.3 3-5, the last half-mile in 49 3-ssec. A. Julian, Royal Bachelor ’s trainer, was very enthusiastic about Sagar’s handling of the colt, who he said had never worked more quietly than he has under Sugar’s control the last two mornings. Sunbeam (Wilson) beat Siegmund (J. McCauley) by a couple of lengths over six furlongs in 1.19 1-5, the last halfmile in 51see. “Jonathan (C. T. Wilson), in the centre, just shaded Top Row (M. Caddy), on inner, with Tray Bit (Wiggins) half a length back, after running six furlongs in 1.17 4-5, the last halfmile in 50 l-ssec. Tray Bit was a trifle scratchy iu action, but he otherwise bears a fit appearance. “Suleiman (Goulsbro 7 ) came down the straight alone, hitting out nicely. The two-year-old Drachma (A. E. Bennet) beat Dunstan (C. T. Wilson) by a length over five furlongs in 1.4 3-5, the last half-mile in 50 2-5. Twenty Grand (R. A. Hawkings) and Floral Robe (S. R. Farland) were together after coming down from the five furlongs barrier on tho course proper. On the Plough. “Roaming (Hawkings) ran seven furlongs alone in 3.34, the last halfmile in 54sec. Arctic King (R. Hawes) beat Alloa (Wiggins) by a length and a-half over five furlongs in 1.4, the last half-mile in 50soe. “Sunny Blonde (R. Sargent) and Settlement (Wilson) took 1.20 for six furlongs, tht last half-mile in 53sec. “The Crooner (Goulsbro) ran six furlongs in 1.17. Old Surrey (H. Johnston) went particularly well over the distance in registering the best figures of 1.15, the last half-mile in 49sec. Catalogue (Goulsbro) took 1.17 for six furlongs, the final half-mile in 50 2-5 sec. Sudan (Goulsbro) came down from the three furlongs on the course proper in 39sec. “F. W. Davis worked Courtcraft, Relative and Francis Drake late on the course proper, each being ridden by P. Atkins. Courtcraft, who looks a picture, did his half-mile in 52 2-ssec. The other pair recorded slower figures, but none was out after time. “Other visiting horses who did useful tasks on the plough were Silver River, Yadanoe, Copycat, Parry, Clessamor, High Test, Majority, Ned Cuttle, Bluffer and Lady Ina. Lady Ina is not quite so trim as she was in the summer, as her winter coat is coming , in early, but she is otherwise in good ; health. | “A. Julian’s two-year-old Olympus, a son of Thracian, carries the good , looks of his sire, and in a short sprint down the straight he impressed as a ' colt who would shortly be making ■ good.” [ Additional rides for the meeting in- • elude:—H.
