Brilliant Gallop by Surmount

YESTERDAY’S TRACK WORK AT AWAPUNI. The outstanding feature of the track work at Awapuni yesterday was a brilliant gallop by Mr C. W. ; Boyd’s colt, Surmount, who was , Hying at the finish of a five funong flutter on the plough. fc>. Anderson was in the saddle and the • colt was carrying plenty of weight. Surmount averaged about 13 to the furlong for the first three but over the last . bit he was galloping with rare bril- , liance and his time ior the full distance was better than 64 seconds. ; He is not racing at Trentham tomorrow but he is engaged in the Chal- : lenge Stakes on Saturday. With a big number of horses away at Trentham, the morning’s programme , was a light one, the majority of the horses being restricted to easy pace work. Among those to gallop were Bing Boy (B. Brown) and Forest Glow (Williamson) and they did not disgrace themselves when they maintained a steady pace throughout six furlongs which took them 1.21. Riotous, who is to go north for the Steeplechase at the Ohinemuri meeting, had Skyful as a companion over six and they were not required to do their best, the time for the distance being 1.23 4-5. W, J. McDowell will ride Riotous iu his Ohinemuri engagements. Noisy Night (S. Anderson) cut an easy half mile out in 57, and Rolling Home (Temperton) recorded 39 for the last three of four furlongs. Gay Molly (L. A. Pine) sprinted six furlongs without being off the bit. She looks well. Segra (W. J. Broughton), from the same stable, sprinted three furlongs on the course proper in 39 3-5. Wildflower (Broughton) was never doing her best in a five furlong flutter on the plough, and her time was 1.9. OAMARU HANDICAPS. Following are the handicaps declared for
