J. Barton, the well-known Dunediu race-horse owner, on his return by the Awatea yesterday, that Ajax is the best horse seen in Australia since the days of Phar Lap. He had high praise for racing administration in Victoria. The stipendiary stewards did their work efficiently • and jockeys who failed to steer their horses properly had the prospect of a month’s holiday. Good prize money was an inducement for honest racing.

The Australian opinion was that New Zealand racing was not up to the standard of the days of Gloaming.
