From Our Own Correspondent. Defence Rifle Club. Members of the Ashhurst Defence Rifle Club fired a practice shoot over the 501 and 600 yards ranges on Saturday in fine weather. A light, changing rront wind required careful watching. Details were as follow: J. Henson 67, J. HargTeaves 67, L. Wotton 67, Mrs R. A. Jones 67, F. Basset 66j. J. B. Searle 66. K. Romley 66, M. Hausmann 65, R. A. Jones 64, E. McCrae 64; T. Orr 63, W. G. Romley 63, H. Russell 62, C. W. Turner 60; K. Bassett (one range only) 34. Next Saturday the club will shoot over the 300yds. range, commencing at 1.30 p.m. Labour Party. A well attended and enthusiastic meeting of the Ashhurst branch of the N.Z Labour Partv was held on Wednesday night. The election of officers resulted in the selection of Mr M. P. Wilkin as president and Mr J. Flowers as secretary. A noteworthy feature of tne evening was the number of applications for membership, no fewer than 32 new members being enrolled. This augurs well for the success of the branch in the coming year. Mothers’ Union. A meeting of the Mother’s Union (Ashhurst branch) was held on March 9. There was an admission service in St. Mary's Church at 2 p.m., when two candidates. Mrs Brice and Mrs Finlay were admitted by the Rev. Ramson, of Terrace End, assisted by Rev. Farnell, after wnlch members adjourned to the Parish hall for the business of the Union and afternoon tea Mr Farnell extended a welcome to Mr and Mrs Ramson and the two ladles who accompanied them. The vicar thanked Mr Ramson for conducting the service. Tennis Club. On Saturday afternoon the Awahou Tennis Club entertained the Ashhurst Club at a return match on the Ashhurst Courts. The Ashhurst team won by 12 sets to five. Details are as follow, Ashhurst players being mentioned first:— Women's singles: Miss K. Brewer heat Miss Bo vis, Miss G. Eaton lost to Miss G. Drinkwater, Mias L. Gavigan beat Miss D. Brewer, Miss V. Muldrock beat Mrs J. Linklater. Men's singles: J. Borrett beat T. McKenzie, N. Brewer beat J. Linklater; B. Williamson beat B.’ Clapham. G. Gavigan lost to S. Palmer; M. Bailey lost to G. Blixt. Women’s doubles: Misses Brewer and Eaton beat Misses Bovis and Drinkwater; Misaes L. Gavigan and Muldrock beat Miss D. Brewer and Mrs Linklater. Men’s double*: Borrett and Brewer beat McKenzie and J. Linklater; B. Williamson and Bailey lost to Clapham and Palm<rCombined doubles: Miss K. Brewer and N. Brewer beat Miss Drinkwater and J. Linklater; Miss Eaton and Borrett beat Miss Bovis and McKenzie; Miss Gavigan and Williamson beat Miss D. Brewer and Clapham; Miss Muldrock and Gavigan lost to Mrs Linklater and Blixt. Afternoon tea was provided by the Awahou ladies. Personal. Mr and Mrs W. N. Brewer have returned from their Australian trip, having visited most of the large centres during their stay.
