Women’s Institutes

CHELTENHAM. The ninth annual meeting was held on Wednesday when Mrs V. Short presided over a fair attendance. Members were welcomed and the secretary, Miss Andrews, read the annual report which gave a comprehensive review of the year's activities. In moving the adoption of the report the president took the opportunity of thanking all members for their support throughout the year especially mentioning Mrs Stevens (hostess organiser), Miss J. Billman (convenor drama circle), Mrs Ross (drama circle producer), Mrs Barltrop (convenor garden circle), Mrs Wither (correspondent), Mrs Shepherd (sales tabic), Mrs Edelston (competitions), Mrs Brooker (hall arrangements), Mrs Fitzpatrick (piano and library). The report on the garden circle activities was given by Mrs Barltrop, who asked for a full measure of support in the coming year for the activities of the circle and the flower shows. The financial statement revealed a very satisfactory state of affairs. The points for the year's competitions were given, the results being:—Cookery, Mrs Fitzpatrick 1, Mrs Brooker 2, and in the flowers Mrs Andrews 1 and Mrs Hocken 2. It was decided that the prizes for these competitions should be given at the birthday party and that in the future a small prize would be given each month for the competitions. Visitors to the meeting included Mesdames Barnicoat and Mcßeth (Kimboiton) and Miss Pearco (Colyton). The election of officers for the ensuing year took place, Mesdames Barnicoat and Mcßeth acting as scrutineers and declaring the following committee elected:—Mesdames Andrews, Barltrop, Brooker, Corkhill, Fitzpatrick, Hocken, W. G. Short, V. Short, Stevens, Ross, Wither, and Mrs Andrews. Mrs Barnicoat then called for nominations for president and Mrs V. Short being the only nominee was declared duly elected. The Following other officers were then elected: —V ice-presidents, Mesdames Barltrop, W. G. Short, and Hocken; garden circle convenor, Mrs Barltrop; correspondent, Mrs Wither, competitions, Mesdames Edleston and Humphrey; sales table, Mesdames Shepherd and Corkhill. The election of a convenor for the drama circle was left until a later meeting. Tho demonstrator for this meeting, Miss Pearco of Colyton, gave a most interesting talk on needlework and showed specimens of work of various periods and countries. Very keen interest was displayed in tho beautiful work and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Miss Pearce. Mrs Barnicoat delighted members with a few anecdotes and together with Mrs Mcßeth who had helped as scrutineer was thanked by the president. New members who were welcomed were: Mrs Harford and Misses Torkington and T. Corkhill. Mrs Fitzpatrick was awarded first place in the competition for madiera cake. The attention of members was drawn to the institute Flower Show which is to be held on the date of the usual meeting in April and schedules are obtainable from the secretaries. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Ireland, Mills and Oliver. TE ARAKURA. The March meeting was held on Monday afternoon. Mrs E. H. Haythorne (president) thanked her committee for all the willing help she had received from them during the past year. Mrs S. Sorensen, who wished to retire from the committee, spoke of the goodfellowship that existed among the members of the committee. In addition to preparatory work for the annual meeting programmes were arranged for the April and May meetings. In April the demonstration will be on cushion making, the competition, sponge roll senior members and Turkish delight for juniors. The flower competition will be for the best bloom in the garden. May was appointed members day and the competitions will be a machinemade cushion for seniors and a bedroom novelty for juniors. Tho flowers will be chrysanthemums, Calendula and berries. Mrs S. Sorensen was chosen to take the chair.
