CHAMPION RINKS BOWLING

Manawatu Centre’s Annual Tournament

PALMERSTON NORTH AND MANAWATU IN PINAL

In brilliant weather and on a green that was looking a picture, the Manawatu Bowling Centre’s annual champion of champions rinks contest was commenced on Saturday. Play was on tho usual knock-out system, and at the conclusion of the day all rinks but Manawatu and Palmerston North had been eliminated. These two will meet in the final next Saturday. The Palmerston North Club’s green, which was used for the tournament, was in magnificent condition for this time of the year, and its appearance and playing condition were much admired by the visiting rinks. Representatives of 11 rinks in the centre competed. It was level pegging throughout in the first-round game between Terraco End and Manawatu. With 18 heads gono, Terrace End led 21-16, but Manawatu equalised with a three and a two. The last head saw Gilberd (No. 3 for Manawatu) carry the jack into the ditch and lie alongside it, making further play useless. Levin led Takaro for the first 12 heads, but two successive fours put Takaro in the lead, 16—11. They then went on to win 23—15.

Oroua and Dannevirke proved very closely matched, the scores being level at four stages of the game. Dannevirke were leading 14—13, after 17 hoads, when Oroua scored a four and a two. Dannevirke got three on the 20th, and needing a similar score on the last head to keep the game alive, failed, Oroua getting a single.

Foxton had a close call in their first game. Takaro opened with a six and after 13 heads had been played, led 16 —8. Foxton scored a total of 10 on the next six heads to their opponents’ two, levelling the scores. Takaro took tho 20th with a single, and it appeared that they would notch a similar score on the last head, but Thomson, with his last bowl, killed the head. On the replay, Foxton secured two, to win 20'—19.

Northern were never in difficulties in their game with Feilding. They scored 11 on the first four heads and went on to win by 30 to 14/ Their score included a six and a five.

Manawatu won another game by a single point when they eleminated Oroua in the second Tound. After two to Oroua on the initial head, Manawatu scored a six and held the lead until Oroua equalised, 15—15, on the 17th head. Each rink then got a single, and another one on the 20th put Oroua in the lead, 17—16. Lying two down on tho 21st, with two seconds, King drove with his last bowl and cleanly took out both shot bowls, to win 18—37. Woodville were hopelessly outclassed by Palmerston North. The official card showed a score of 38—12, but there were indications that the margin was much greater.

It was thought that Northern, last year’s champion rink, would be too good for Manawatu in the semi-finals, but expectations were wrong. King and his men played splendidly. There was free scoring on the first six heads, at the conclusion of which the points were level, B—B. Manawatu then forged ahead irresistibly, Northern taking one only of the next 10 heads after burning many that were not to their liking. Manawatu now led 23—11. Tho 17th and 18th went to Northern, who obtained a total of three. A three to Manawatu on the next head put them in a practically unassailable position, 26 14. Two to Northern on the 20th ended the game. It appeared as if Foxton would have a comfortablo win over Palmerston North, but a disastrous seven completely altered the complexion of the game. The southereners took the lead after two heads, and with 15 heads gone were leading 18—9. Three more heads and Foxton led 19—13. When Thomson went to the mat for the 19th it looked as if he was lying two or three down, and he twice tried to draw the shot, failing by an inch or two to get a wick that would have accomplished the desired end. On the bowls being counted, there was general surprise when it was found that there were seven counters. Another two to Palmerston North on the next head saw Foxton requiring four on tho last to win. Thomson, with two or three seconds, had a chance, but was unable to remove the shot bowl, and Palmerston North got Detailed results are as follow: First Round. When darkness compelled a cessation of play the previous Saturday in the

semi-final between Foxton and Northern, the latter were leading 15—14 with 16 heads gone. On the game being resumed on Saturday morning, Foxton equalised with a single. Two singles to Northern were followed by a two to Foxton, and the pairs were level at the start of the last head. Foxton were lying one when Skoglund drove for the jack and, picking it up cleanly, sprung it back to one of his own bowls. Thompson failed with a draw, and the honours went to Northern. DRESS RULE NOT OBSERVED There is one rule of the New Zealand Bowling Association that some bowlers lose sight of. Their dress is very slovenly. Thi» happens on many greens. Tho rule to be observed by bowlers is cream or grey trousers and club colours and hat bands. The Manawatu Centre bacalled attention to this in its poster for {he Easter tournament.
