Kiwitea County

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL The Kiwitea County Council met at Ivimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean (chairman) presiding. There were also present Crs. W. P. Shaw, J. A. T. Brown, D. T. Couper, W. G. Clapham, J. Beard, F. E. Tappin, J. H. Williamson and W. Hair. Correspondence. The following correspondence was dealt with:— From Hon. P. C. Webb, acting Minister of Internal Affairs, advising that advice had been received from the High Commissioner that the Coronation Planting Committee are preparing for the gracious acceptance of his Majesty the King, a record in book form, to be known as the Royal Record, of all planting and amenity schemes organised in commemoration of the Coronation, both in the United Kingdom and the Empire overseas. The writer forwarded a supply of a form which had been prepared for the purpose of setting out the particulars required, and re quested the council’s co-operation and assistance in giving publicity to the matter and arranging for a form, together with a -copy of his letter, to be sent to those who are known to bo responsible for planting In the county. — Received.

From the Public Works Department, forwarding copy of Main Highways Board’s circular of January' -5 last in connection with the maintenance of gravelled roads.—Referred to the county overseer.

From the Public Works Department, forwarding authority for the expenditure of £250 on a £5 to £1 basis in connection with the metalling of the balance of Titirangi road, Mangaweka.— Received.

From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, forwarding schedule showing the council’s proposals for the expenditure of “thirds 77 which have been approved by tho Land Board.—Received. From the Rangitikei County Council, requesting this council’s co-operation in order to cope with the spread of noxious weeds throughout the county.—Decided to refer the letter to the Kiwitea Rabbit Board. From Mr. A. H. Entwisle, drawing the council’s attention to cattle straying in the Beaconsfield road.—lt was reported that the matter had been attended to. From Mr. T. M. C. Smith, requesting permission to re-erect tho boundary fence of his property fronting the Main road, Mangarimu. —Granted, subject to the usual conditions Treasurer’s Report. The county finances were reported on as follow:—County fund account (dbt.), £1234 7s 7d; employees’ accommodation account (cr.), £376 15s sd; Kimbol ton cemetery account (cr.), £l3 9s lOd; land fund account (cr.), £l6l 6s 6d; Rangiwahia cemetery account (cr.), £2 17s 8d; Waituna cemetery account (cr.), £6 14s 3d. Rate Statement. The county rate position was reported on as follows:—General rates: Struck, £8163 3s 9d; paid, £4482 10s sd; outstanding to date, £3680 13s 4d. Special rates: Struck, £6582 2s 2d; paid, £3471 15s sd; outstanding to date, £3llO 6s 9d. Arrears (three years) general rates: Outstanding at April 1, 1937, £265 3s 8d; paid, £55 18s 9d; outstanding to date, £209 4s lid. Special rates: Outstanding April 1, 1937, £215 13s lOd; paid, £42 9s; outstanding to date, £173 4s lOd. Overseer’s Report. The following report on the roads was submitted on behalf of the county overseer (Mr. F. H. Eggers) : Main highway's: All sections of the main highways have been kept in good condition by the grader plants. The delivery of maintenance metal on the No. 553 main highway has been completed. The work of constructing a new culvert at Ireland’s on the main highway has also been completed. The contractors have made a start delivering maintenance metal on the sections ot the No. 377 main highway iu the ODgo riding. Roads other than main highways; The roadmen in the various ridings have attended to the necessary maintenance work. The new culvert ou Bryce’s line is completed and a start has been made with the one on Barrow’s line. The heavy rain on Saturday last did considerable damage to the road surfaces, especially to the recently metalled portion of the Titirangi road, where the metal was washed off the road in places. The metal was obtained from the Kawhatau river and is unsuitable for this particular portion of the road.
