From Our Own Correspondent. Personal. Mrs A. Allen has returned to her home in Wellington after staying with her cousin, Mrs E. J. Lankshear. Mrs C. Young, who is recovering from a severe illness, has left to spend a holiday with her parents in Tauranga. Mrs Gregory has left for Nelson, where she intends staying for some weeks. Mr and Mrs G. Allwriglit were recent visitors to New Plymouth. A welcome is extended to Mr and Mrs A. Jensen, of Palmerston North, who are now residents of this district. Mrs W. Williams and her small daughter, Pat. lmve returned from a holiday spent at Paruparaumu beach. The winner of the silver cup, donated by Mr W. Ellery for the boys' 103 yards championship at the Opiki sehol picnic on Friday was Olliver Phillips, and an order donated by Mr J. Selwin, of Palmerston North for a similar race for the girls, was won by Ina Jackson. Gardening Circle. The leader, Airs G. J. Wilde, presided over a special meeting of the Gardening Circle committee on February 9. Among those present were Mesdames J. D. Aitchison, G. Larsen, J. A. Cooksley and W. Irwin. It was decided to postpone the dahlia show until March 1. owing to dry weather conditions retarding growth. The bulbs purchased from Mr G. Larsen were distributed among members. A dance will be held on the evening of March 1. School Picnic and Sports. Tito annual picnic and sports for the settlers of Makerua Plains was held on the Akers Estate on February 11. Although rain feil in the morning, the afternoon was brilliantly fine and the many who gathered to witness the events, thoroughly enjoyed the day. The arrangements were in the hands of the Opiki school Committee, Messrs B. A. Uorman (chairman), V. Claridge (secretary), A. Alve, E. Henderson and J. Mabey, and the ladies, along with the teachers, Misses E. Matthews and A. Clayton, worked tirelessly to make ail enjoyable time for all. Following are the results of the events: .Sack race, buys. R. Barrow 1, Mrs R. L. Horn 2; men, S. Claridge 1, J. Mabey 2. Lunch and afternoon tea were served in the hall, while ices, fruit and sweets were given to the children during the afternoon. A successful euchre and dance was held in the evening, attracting a large attendance from all parts of the'district. A cake donated by Mr H. Cresswell, of Tokomaru, was won by Ronald Barrow. The winners of the spot waltz were Miss N. Phillips and partner, and the euchre was won byMrs J. Percy and Mr Mabey. Music for dancing was provided by Mr M. Creighton, of Palmerston North.
