Boxes of Butter Affected by Oil Fumes
DISCOVERY ON PORT WYNDHAM Per Press Associalion. AUCKLAND, Last Night. Because crude oil fumes, possibly from the ship's tanks, appeared to havo worked their way id to one of the holds of the Port Wyndham, now loading produce for England, the precaution has been taken of removing a cargo of 10,800 boxes of butter and transferring it to another hold. It is not considered that any serious damage was done to tho cargo, and although a few boxes may have been , affected, the whole cargo will be closely surveyed iu London.
No butter would be permitted to go into consumption in England if it were in any way affected, and, if necessary, the stocks would be reconditioned there before they reached the retailer. The butter concerned came from a southern port, and the hold at the time of loading was inspected by Government officials and ship's officers. It was then clear of fumes. There is every reason to believe that any damage is very slight and restricted to comparatively few cases.
