On Trentham Tracks

i WOODVILLE TRIALS SOME RIDING ENGAGEMENTS Trentham will be better represented at Woodville smd Wanganui during the next two weeks than it has been at recent meetings, and candidates for these* two fixtures held the stage in the galloping this morning, states 1 ‘Rangatira, ”• of the Post. The weather was fine and cooler after overnight rain, and the grass track was again brought general commission. Daylight is ot coming in now till after 5.30 a.m., the days having shortened a lot during the last fortnight. j Roaming (R. A. Hawkings) ran a mile without undue exertion in lmin. 50sec., the last half-mile taking 544 sec. He looks in good order to tackle the .Woodville Handicap, in which no rider has yet been engaged for him. Arctic King Forward, j Rockingham (P. Burgess) was always just ahead of Arctic King (S. Wilson) in their six furlongs, and he won the gallop by a short head in lmin. 18 3-ssec., the lant half-mile in 52 3-ssee. ■ Both horses are well forward. Arctic King has taken on a brighter appearance than when previously raced and he should not be long in striking form again on easy tracks. Wilson will be on him when lie resumes on the second day at Woodv ille. Trebor (A. E. Bennet) was always ahead of Alloa (A. W. Sim) in their six furlongs, and he finished two lengths in froi.t, easily holding his own, in lmin. 18 ITisec., the last half-mile in 53sec. Alloa is a cunning worker, but Trebor in the past has also had a reputation for laziness. The time was good in comparison with other trials. Camilla Horn (F. Power) was always going too well for Twilight Song (R. Hawes) over a mile in lmin. 47 4-ssec., the last half-mile in 55 3-ssec. Camilla Horn could have done better if pushed. Twilight galloped disappointly, but he may im prove with the colours up, as he ran his best race since coming north at Pahiatua last start. Quexona (E. D, Gerrard) dashed away from Protectress (S. R. Farland) over the first portion- of five furlongs, but she stopped iu the last furlong and Protectress beat her home by a head in lmin. ssec., the last half-mile in 52 l-ssec. Quexona is to run in the hack six at WoodviLle, and Protectress, who has had only one previous start, will represent the stable in the Maiden Plate. Southern Blood (Burgess), doing it easily, was a short length in front of Sunbeam (Wilcon) after running six furlongs in lmin. 19 4-ssec., the last half-mile in sii 4-ssec. Southern Blood is happier with the sting out of the ground. Sunbeam has not impressed greatly in his work since transferring to Trentham. On the two-year-old grass, Twenty Grand (Hawkings) accounted for Whi/e Lady (Wilson) by a neck over half a mile in 50sec. Twenty Grand is developing into a promising sort of colt, and even if he does not win in the best class I this, season, he should be a good three-year-old. White Lady is to make her (race debut ,at the Carterton meeting |where two-year-olds are eligible to run i in the maiden event. | Siegmund was not out of the track and there is a doubt about his going to Woodville. His failure oh the'first day at Egmont is thought likely to have beeu due to hi:3 eight hours’ standing in the float on one of the muggiest days of the summer. When he arrived at' Hawera he was a. tired horse. Wanganui Candidates. Sigurd (R. A. Dodson) and. Debhani (C. Burgess), who are. booked for Wanganui, went a sound. working gallop over six furlongs in . lmin. 19see. Cricket (Dodson) and Accomplice G. Flood) took lmin. 53sec. for a mile, the last half in SEisec. Cuddle Sim), going a round, did her last mile in lmin. 47 4-ssee., and her last half-mile :Ln 53 3-ssec., but she was never at top. She will probably go to Wanganui. Liane Burgess) finished under a hold a length in front of Gaylord Wilson), after slipping over three furlongs iu 38 3-ssec. Free Gold Gerrard) took lmin. 19 3-ssec. for six furlongs, the last half-mile in 54 l-ssec. Alunga (Sim) came down the straight, but was not timed. On the tvro-year-old grass, Lady Baron (Farland) beat Floral Robe (Bennet) by a neck over three furlongs in 38sec. Sunee (A. Slagar) continued his education as a jumper by going over the five schooling flights of hurdles without a flaw, except ho was inclined to run down the last two obstacles a little. He fences very fs,st and goes at top between the fences. His next schooling will probably be done with Red Sun as a mate. Riding engagements for Woodville include: S. Wilson, Hunting Queen, Impersonator, Sunbeam, Twenty Grand, and Kahikatoa or Jovialty; P. Burgess Rockingham, Protectress, Southern Blood, Maestro, and Siegmund (if started) ; and A. I!. Bennet, Trebor. RICHARDS’ FIRST RIDING OUTFIT It i 3 mentioned by a London paper that champion jockey Gordon Richards’ first riding breeches and leggings cost 45s—even theu he only got them as an afterthought cm the part of Martin Hartigan, his employer. The Newmarket tailor, .S. Rutherford, was on a visit to Hartigan’s stables at Ogbourne to lit the lads with racing outfits. He was about to go when Hartigan stopped him and exclaimed, 1 ‘Oh, that boy had fetter have a pair of breeches and leggings, too. He * has just ridden a winner. ” The boy he pointed to wan Gordon Richards. COSTLY RACE FOR STARTERS There are 311 entries for the Santa Anita Derby, of £12,500, to be run on February 22. Nominations closed in December, so the management did not lose anything by such a late entry. It is not a cheap race for competitors, as, while the nomination fee was £6 10s, it costs about £l3O to start.
