Gallops at Woodville

PIPE-OPENER BY COURTCRAFT OVER SIX FURLONGS

COURSE IN GREAT ORDER FOR SATURDAY.

The course proper, with the trestles 33 .feet out, was available for the fast work at Woodville yesterday morning, and there were several interesting gallops, among which was a six furlong flutter by Courtcraft who broke 1.18 without being asked to do much more than run along. Courtcraft is entered for Te Aroha but yesterday morning it appeared to be a toss up whether he would make the trip or not.

Courtcraft was ridden by N. Cavaney in yesterday’s gallop and he hopped away about the seven and was allowed to coast along until just short of the three in 39 and he maintained an even six where he was speeded up. Without being out after time he reached the pace to the finish,-the last three taking him 38 4-5, He looks a picture of health.

The first two out on the track were Brown Oak and Golden Flame and they were exercised on the No. 2 grass by M. Gilmore. Brown Oak is a fine looking colt and it is intended that his next racing will be done in Australia. Maestro, who looks none the worse for his recent racing, was let off with a light task. He may have lightened up a bit since Pahiatua but he looks well

Joe Louis (L. D. Orange) and Golden Ridge (C. McGovern) were companions in a five furlong gallop on the plough. They took 27 3-5 for the first two and, with Joe Louis a shade in front, they completed in 1.5 1-5. They were going very easily at the finish and they could have, improved on the time without much trouble.

In addition to Golden Ridge, C. McGovern is training a half-brother of Stroller, called Stroll In. He is a like-ly-looking sort and he is owned by Mr R. Bousfield in whose colours Stroller used to race.

Gold Tinge, recently purchased by Mr W. H. Gaisford, was out doing pace work. Woodville seems to be agreeing with him and he appeared to want to make the pace a bit faster yesterday.

Francis Drake was exercised on the plough. The Taranaki trip did him no harm and he should be in good nick for Saturday. He is entered for Wanganui and for Te Aroha but next week’s programme has not yet been mapped out. Son and Heir (M. Trac'ey) galloped six furlongs on his own. He took just under 41 for the first three but finished strongly to cut the full distance out in 1.19 4-5. He is to race at Woodville on Saturday.

Mala has been sent back to T. E. Russell to be disciplined and to anyone who saw him out yesterday morning it would be hard to believe that he could give any trouble. His task was a couple of rounds at an easy pace and he did it like a lamb. Russell’s present scheme is for a pony to give Mala a lead. Yesterday when the pony set off at a smart trot Mala called out and started after it, and he jogged along contentedly about a chain behind the pony. Russell’s next problem, however, is to decide how to make Mala go quietly when the pony is not there to give him a lead. It is stated that if Mala behaves himself and works well he is likely to return to Australia at the end of March.

Aiwai (B. Cosford) sprinted half a mile and after taking 14 secs for the first furlong she finished very strongly to complete the full distance in 51 4-5. She is entered for Wanganui but it is not certain yet whether she will start. She may not be in top racing condition yet but she is very well. Golden Memory (Tracey) was a neck in front of Waterproof (Cavaney) at the end of five furlongs, the last half mile of which took 54. Sports Coat (Gilmore) scampered over three furlongs in 38£ and .he stretched out in good style, working very well. One of the last to work was Cher~~ Plum, the Beau Pere colt who won on the .second day of the Pahiatua meeting. He appears to have lightened up a bit since that race. Yesterday he was sprinted five furlongs with Gilmore in the saddle. He hit out boldly and he cut the distance out in 1.5, the last three in 38. WINTON ACCEPTORS INVERCARGILL, Feb. 14.
