WOODVILLE ACCEPTANCES. FIELDS FOR SATURDAY ARE GOOD. BETTING SINGLE POOL. The acceptances for the first day of the Woodville autumn meeting, which opens on Saturday, closed last evening, and a very small proportion of the horses nominated were dropped out of the list.

The betting at Woodville will be conducted under the single-pool system and the first race is timed to start at 12.15 p.m. The smallest field on the programme is that for the Kumeroa Hack, the eighth race, and there is a chance that the order will bo altered and that the Kumeroa Hack‘will be run as the seventh event and the County Hack as the eighth, starting about 5 p.m. The list of acceptances with starting

AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB ACCEPTANCES. AUCKLAND, Feb. 15. Following are the acceptances for the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on

AMERICAN CRACK RETIRES It was thought that last season’s American crack three-year-old, Granville, would race again this year, but Mr. W, Woodward recently announced that he had leased him to K. N. Gilpin for stud purposes for five years. SuDsequent to striking .himself in his last race, the Lawrence Realisation, Granville was fired, bat, though he seemed sound after that operation, the fact that there are very few races in America, apart from handicaps, for horses of four or over, probably influenced Mr. Woodward in retiring him. Granville started 18 times for eight wins, four seconds, three thirds, three times unplaced, and £22,364. He is by Gallant Fox from Gravita, by Sarmatian, son of the French stallion, Bardanaple. THERE'S SOMETHING IN A NAME Horses can be aptly-named without any reference to their sires or dams, but it is improbable that the connections of an English jumper labouring under the name of Burglar, thought that the latter would ever be “ arrested" by a representative of the law. After falling in a steeplechase at Hurst Park recently, however, Burglar regained his legs and dashed among the crowd on the course. Appropriately enough, a policeman intervened andtook him into custody. SATISFACTORY ENGLISH SALES

At the Newmarket sales in Decembor, 822 horses were disposed of for 248,052 guineas, against the previous year’s total of 214,960 guineas. Altogether 1110 lots were offered. An average of 301}fc guineas was ahoad of those of several previous years, but, although several other countries bought well, it is stated that not a single lot of breeding value was purchased for the United States. Among the stallions, Fairhaven realised 3600 guineas. An Australian breeder went to 3500 guineas for him but was outstayed by the representative of an Irish stud. SOMETHING LIKE A MEMORY

The retentive memories possessed by some horses can be a source of worry to their owners and to backers. Instances could be quoted of horses that have pulled up of their own ac count in races at the identical spot where they are in the habit of finishing their training gallops, or of leaving the track after a trial spin, and of others that are inclined to shy at a certain part of the course where they might have been involved in an accident or near-accident at some previous date. All of which gets round to the fact that a 41 good ’ ’ memory was blamed for the failure of the heavily-backed favourite, Free Fare, in a hurdle race at Hurst Park (England) recently. Freo Fare, to the chagrin of his supporters, pulled up before entering the straight —at the identical spot that he had been eased up in a schooling gallop on the same course early in 19331

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES W. J. Broughton will be riding at the Waikato meeting, which opens on Saturday, and ho has been engaged for Mazir, Star Artist, Whirling, .Rollicker and Royal Bachelor. S.
