liquor Sold After Hours
MAGISTRATE IMPOSES PINE An order for liquor, given in the afternoon, and collected from an hotel at 8 p.m. for consumption at a bridge party that evening, led to two prosecutions for breaches of the Licensing Act before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The licensee of the Carlton hotel, G. H. V. Simpson, was charged with selling liquor after hours on January 27. He pleaded guilty. S. J. R. Morgan, Carman, was charged with supplying liquor after hours. He pleaded guilty. Senior Sergeant Mclntyre said that at 8.50 p.m. on January 27 Sergeant O’Donnell and a constable saw a parcel of liquor being placed in a car outside the hotel. It was placed in the car by the barman-porter. The licensee was then on the premises. For Simpson, Mr A. M. Ongley said that at 4.30 a lady telephoned an order for some liquor required for a bridge party in her homo that evening. She did not call until after liconsed trading hours. Simpson was now prosecuted for the first time. He took over the hotel at a particularly difficult time, and there had recently been favourable comment on the improved management of the Carlton. The barman who was new to his work, had not realised ho was committing a breach. Mr Mclntyre confirmed that the recent conduct of the hotel had been most satisfactory. Simpson was lined £2 with costs 13s; Morgan was fined £1 with costs 10s.
