Women’s Institutes

, CHELTENHAM. After tho January recess tho institute assembled on Wednesday for tho February meeting. A good attendance was presided over by tho president, Mrs. E. E. Short, who welcomed mem bers. Nominations were received for the incoming committee which will be oleeted at tho annual meeting, next month. A* general discussion on next year’s programme took place and many suggestions were brought forward. It was docidcd that “gardening notes” should have a place in each month *s programme. A most interesting talk on sweet making was given by Mrs. Humphreys who delighted members by giving several reliable hints and recipes of the sweets she displayed. A pleasant feature of the meeting was "experiences” which wero contributed by members. A "telegram” competition which was very popular was won by Mrs. Ferguson. The hostesses wero Mesdames E. Way, W. W. Andrews, 'Misses YoungcV and Andrews.

The final mooting of the 1930-37 committee of the Makiuo Women's Institute was held in Feilding on Friday last. Mrs Mason presided, and it was gratifying to see a full attendance. The secretary, (Mrs E. Potty; and treasurer (Mrs E. Moray) presented their reports covering the year’s activities and finances. Both reports were passed, and will be placed before tho general meeting next March. Twenty-five nominations have been received and it was decided that fifteen bo tho maximum number on tho committee. On the motion of Mrs Moray, £1 was donated to tho Makiuo Hall funds, and 5s to tho Halva tion Army Sunday Hchool. All were sorry to hear of tho impending departure of Mr and M/s E. Vautier from the district. Arrangements were made for a send-off social and supper to bo held in tho Makiuo Hall on Saturday, the 27th inst., when all ladies were requested to brin\ a basket, tho gentdemen to help on tno financial side. This evening will be open to everybody ’n tho district, and a largo crowd is expected to attend. The flower competition having proved so popular each month, it was decided to continue, and as well to hold a vegetable competition. Homo new rules aud restrictions will bo made in this connection. Airs Wilton is taking the responsibility of arranging the competition. Plans were made for the annual meeting, and the agenda for tho mouth of April was finalised. Heats are available in the bus to the group meeting to bo held at Pohangina ou February 24, and members who wish to avail themselves of a day’s outing uro requested to ring the secretary. Tho president thanked the committee for their loyalty and cooperation, which has helped to make the closing year, a very happy and useful one so far as the institute is concerned.

TE AKAKURA Mrs A. Griffith presided at tho February meeting on Wednesday afternoon. The speaker for tho day being unable to be present, a short talk on a visit to Honolulu by a member and a demonstrator on Ear bo la work by Mrs E. 11. Ilaythorne filled in tho afternoon. Mrs F. M. Bradley was elected delegate for tho groups meeting. Tho winners in the sponge cake competition were Mrs It. R. Tait 1, Mrs F. M. Bradley 2, Mrs E. H. Ilaythorne junior members Mrs D. Lowes 1. The month's bloom's competition results were:—Great decorative dahlia, Mrs A. Griffith I; intermediate decorative dahlia, Mrs S. Borensenj Pom-Pou dahlia, Mrs W. E. Thomas 1; Scabious, .Mrs F. M. Bradley 1. Members wer« reminded of tho unnual meeting and election of eommittoo next month. Mis A. Griffith announced that she would not bo a contestant for tho oftico of president. A eommittoo of ten, including a new president, will bo required. A motion of thanks to those members who had made articles for tho exhibition at the Feilding show and to the stewards in charge, was carried. Tho hostesses wore Mcsdamcs F. J. Russell, C. Kendrick, NV. Ausin, 11. Swain son and F. Rich. Tho competition for March is the bost article made from cardboard not to be cloth covered and the blooms will bo stock, French marigold and aster. The competitions for the day wore kindly judged by Mrs A. Buick. ASHHURST. The February meeting of the Ash hurst Women's Institute was held last week, Mrs. J. Flowers presiding over a much smaller attendance than usual, probably duo to this being tho flrst meeting of the new year. Many members are away on holidays. Tho president extended a hearty welcome to all. Apologies were received from tho secretary (Mrs. W. N. Brower) and Mesdames Bloakley and Murphy. Tho noin iuations for tho new eominitteo for the ensuing year are to be left open until February 2 li. A vote of sympathy with Mesdames /Sumner, Evans and A. F Williamson in their recent bereave meats was passed, members standing in silence. A very interesting demonstration on lloral work was given by Mrs. Ilaythorne, who received u hearty vote of thanks from members. A bring and buy stall was attended to by Airs. Evans. An Irish jig oanced by Laureen Fairless aud a roeitatiou by Joan Barclay were greatly appreciated. The month's competitions vvoro judged by two of tbo visitors, Mrs. Ironside and Miss Book. Ln tho flower competition (seniors) Airs. A. Currie was flrst, Mrs. Brockic second and Mrs. Evans third. Tho rucked cushion (seniors) was won by Miss Tremewan, with Mrs. Flowers second, and tho junior competition by Miss Hj'ndman flrst and Alias Wilkins second. Tho picnic was discussed and it was decided to postpone it indefin-

itely. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Alesdames Young, Tremewan, Misses Aluldrock and Tremewan.
