The Pig Industry

ANNUAL MEETING- OF N.Z. BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION

Tho annual meeting of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association was held in Palmerston North on Thursday, when Mr J, A. Russell (Palmerston North) presided over an attendance of about thirty members.

The annual report', as already pubIshed, was adopted, together with the balance-siheot,. which disclosed an excess of income over expenditure for the past, year of £275 6s 3d and an accumulated fund of £2238 3s.

Speaking to tho roport, the chairman said determined efforts wore being made by tho council to establish a national scheme of instructional, research and recording work, and hopes were held that the Government) would mebt tho wishes of tho association. The Ward system of election to tho council had proved an outstanding success, and there was .now a lino feeling among broeders from ono end of tho Dominion to the other. A burning matter was tho embargo on imports, and in view of tho fact that the importation of highclass stud stock was very desirable, it was felt that tho present strigent regulations should be lifted, or, alternately, that importations of stud stock from Great Britain shoud be subsidised by tho Government. The Australian breeder had no stringent regulations to contend with.

Mr Russell welcomed to the meeting South Island members of tho association, mentioning particularly Mr M. Williams, M.P.

Dealing with the balance-sheet, the secretary (Mr K. S. Glendinning) said a most satisfactory position was revealed. Tho assets were not frozen, but wero liquid. Breeders wero fortunate in the council that they had, and it was a tribute to these gentlemen that those who were retiring under tho rules were being re-elected unopposed. There was a big need for an instructional scheme; it was no uso sending damaged or diseased carcases overseas, for they wore simply rejected when they reached Home. Tho following retiring councillors were re-elected: Messrs D. G. Morrison (North Auckland), R. C. Clark (Auckland), G. S. Ross (Bay of Plenty), J. A. Russell (Wellington South) and W. L. West (Hawke’s Bay). In acknowledging his election as a lifo member of tho association, Mr N. P. Nielsen (Tiakitahuna) urged that, now tho association was iu such a healthy position, it should consider giving further help to breeders and branches, and tho industry generally. Ho was pleased that tho pig was now regarded by farmers as being of more importance than previously. Tho following remit, moved on behalf of tho Manawatu-Oroua branch by Mr H. E. Thurston, was carried: “That consideration be given to tho advisability or rules being introduced for th« providing of a breeding return caci year by every pedigreo breeder.” Votes of thanks were accorded the association’s officers for their work during the past year. At a subsequent meeting of the council, Mr Russell was re-elected president; Messrs R. C. Clark (Paerata) and F. Ogle (Normanby) vice-presidents and Messrs W. P. Bickers (Feilding) and W. L. West (Woodvillo) executive members. Those attending the meeting were later tho guests of tho ManawatuOroua branch of tho association at afternoon tea at Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s. MEETING OF COUNCIL A meeting of the council of the association was held prior to the annua' meeting, when Mr J. A. Russell (Palmerston North) presided. Also present wero Messrs R. Chilcott (South Taranaki), A. R. Gudopp (North Taranaki), J. Simpson (Canterbury), W. L. West (Hawke’s Bay), W. P. Bickers (Wellington North), P. S. Morrison (North Auckland), F. Oglo (South Taranaki). G. S. Ross (Bay of Plenty) and R. C Clark (Paerata). The chairman reported that a deputa tio.. thad waited on the Director-Genera of Agriculture in regard to the associa tion’s national recording proposals. Mi

Cockayne had promised that something would be done and that every breeder would have the opportunity of having his pedigree pigs recordod, but to dato little had been done.

The'association's special recording committee was empowered to do whatever was considered necessary to" further proposals. Messrs W. R. Bethune J (Papakura) and A. J. Eaynes (Patumahoe) were accepted for inclusion in the senior judges’ list (largo white and' Tamworth sections) on the recommendation of tho Auckland branch, and Mr' C. Hawke (Runciman) in tho junior judges’ list (Berkshire and Tamworth sections).

Recommendations for inclusion in tho list of judges wero accopted from, the South. Auckland branch as follow: Senior, Messrs R. Chilcott (Frankton), R. Chilcott, jnr. (Frankton), L. F. Barry (To Rapa), F. Discombe (Cambridge), G. Jamieson (Horotiu), C. S. Mexted (Gordonton), A. T. Rogers (Ngaruawakiaj. Associate: Messrs G. H. Barton (Whata Whata), P. G. Lindsay (Whata Whata), G. D. Porritt (Hamilton). With tho idea of securing more uniformity in judging, it was decided that judging demonstrations should bo held at the major shows. The matter of appointing demonstrators was held over till the next meeting of tho council. Believing that there should bo one strong branch for the wholo of Taranaki, the South Taranaki’s branch advised that it was amalgamating with North Taranaki.

A letter from the Bay of Plenty branch urged tho institution of a classification scheme for pigs, on the lines of that used by Jersey cattle breeders. Believing tho suggestion to be sound, but that recording should bo given prior attention, tho meeting decided to review the matter in a year’s time.
