A liftii dofeudant, Amos Uardisty, who borrowed a torch because his lamp had fallen and been broken, was let off with a reduced line of 5s with 3s costs. “A torch is not a light,’’ commented his Worship.

Despito tho experience of previous years, when drivers have bccu prosecuted and lined for coming oil to the roads aud highways on Juno 1 without their new numberplates, a largo number drove serenely into the arms of waiting constables yesterday in the city. As forecast, the police were out early, and the “caught" numbered well over fifty. Quite a number had procured their plates but had not put them ou the cars. It remains to be seen how much weight that excuse will carry with the Court.

❖ <S> <S> <?> The Orion Motor Club held a reliability trial at the week-cud over a course of approximately -15 miles, via tho main road to Linton, down Scott's road and along tho Main Drain road to Opiki, the return being via the main road, up through the Kahuterawa Val ley and across tho Tiritea block to the starting point. This route included several uuid sections and grass bush roads, necessitating skilful handling of the machines. Points were deducted for lost time and in observed sections for riders using footwork, and for stalling of motors. The performances put up by the placed men were very creditable, the result being:—E. Astin 1, P. Sutton 2, R. Styles 3.
