Unpleasant Whitsun
BIG CROWDS ENJOY ENGLISH HOLIDAY.

Cool weather is likely for Whitsun with somo rain, but there is no sign that holiday-makers will be deterred by the not wholly favourable forecast. Heavy holiday traffic is reported by tho railways and air transport lines. Doubled and trebled air services were unabic to cope with the record demand for bookings. The London, Midland and .cottish t'ailway is running 500 and the London North Eastern railway over 1200 additional trains during Whitsuntide. The mileage to be covered by the Great Western railway holiday excursion trains to-morrow and Monday will bo about 80,000 miles. Among many special attractions is the international horse show at Olympia, which opened to-day. The Lord Mayor and Sherriff rodo in state through the arena.

After the coldest Whitsuneve for 20 years following the coldest Easter of this century the weather changed. Bank holiday crowds wake up to a sunny morning and rushed to the seaside and the country. Hundreds ot long-distance excursions were running, but the trains from the centres for country- rambles 20 and 30 miles out of London were the most crowded.
Tho roads on Saturday and SumMy were the quietest for years at this period, but all the ears wero out to day. There was plenty of sport, including eleven first-class cricket matches and the usual number of Whitsun conferences, mainly for trade unions and friendly societies-
