From Our Owu Correspondent. Diamond Jubilee of Local School. The Halcombe School ivas opened in 1577 when the roll number was -1, so tnat next year the school will have Deen in l existence for CO years. Part of the present school once formed the original building and it has stood the test ot time iemarkably well. Old pupils of the school resident in the district are keenly forward to the diamond jubilee celebrations which are to be held next year. The preliminary.discussion or plans is to take place at a meeting to be held in the school on Monday evening. March oil. Hockey Club Meets. , Tho annual meeting of the Ladies Hockey Club was held on Tuesday evening if the Jubilee Hall. The chair was taken by Mr. M. C. Amadio, Mr. W. Rogers, the president, being unavoidably absent. The following were the officers elected for 1936: Patron, Mr W„Heappe> (re-elected); president, Mr. Tv. Messrs. A. Sterne, R. Moran, J. Wischnowsky, 1. Clapham; selectors and coaches, Mr. M. Wischnowsky and the captain. Although there are quite a number of the older members now married or away from the district, there is some promising new blood which should weld into quite a good combination. Mr. T. Iwikau, who last year acted as coach, having passed away, his place will be hard to fill and in this respect the club is unfortunate, as the late Mr. Iwikau had a very sound knowledge of the game. However, with assiduous practice the club should be able to offer formidable resistance to their opponents in tho coming season. Personal. Mr B. Miles, of the Post Office staff, lias resumed his duties having _ recently spent his annual leave in Taupiri. Mrs. E. Markham and her daughter, Miss D. Markham, are back in Halcombe after a holiday visit to Nelson. The friends of Mrs. S. Williams will be leased to bear that after some time spent in the Wellington Hospital, she is r.ow at home again. The friends of Mr. J. Murray of the Halcombe Post Office tendered lnm a farewell evening at the residence of Mrs. K Anderson on Wednesday. After an enjoyable evening spent in games and music, a small presentation was made to the guest of honour. Mr. Murray will be stationed at Shannon. At present staying in New Plymouth is Mrs. C. C. Bleakley. Mr. and Mrs. N. Adams are now holidaying in Hawera. Mr. J. 11. Blunden is away deerstalking in the Wairoa district. Mr. W. H. Harris has returned to Halcomb'e after a visit to Motueka. Benefit Dance. Tho social and dance held in the Jubilee Hall on Thursday evening by the local branch of tho Women’s Institute in aid of the McGregor Benefit Fund was al ) unqualified success. Those who attended were favoured with excellent dance music and the musical and other items were well rendered. The programme included: Recitation, “The Lost Mouse,’’ Bat Dudding; songs. Mrs. M. C. Amadio; duet, J Ngaire Te Funga and Joy Wischnowsky; I quartette. Dawn ana Charlie Managh, Eddie Schaeran and Itae Stewart; reci- ' tation, Bruce Miles; trio, lan Ferguson, Dawn Managh and Rao Stewart; solo, Mr. J., Curtis; solo, Mrs. Curtis; humorous recitation, Mr. M. C. Amadio; cornet solo, Mr. S. Staples, accompanied by Mr. A Feeney on the piano. Members of the Institute under the direction of Miss G. James also produced a playette entitled “Sinking.” This was Well executed and evoked rounds of applause. The cast was: Julia, Mrs. Schaeran: Louisa, Mrs. R. Duddlng; Penelope, Mrs. D. C. Managh; maid. Miss Thelma Miles; Mildred, Mrs. W. Stewart. During the evening several novelty dances were held, the prize-winners being: Lucky Gay Gordons, Mr. M. Harland and Miss O. Fergusson; Monte Carlo, Mr. B. Rylands and Miss M. Noffke; second Gay Gordons, Mr. J. Parsons and Mrs. D. C. Managh, After

supper, the president, Mrs. W. Davies, thanked all those who had assisted in making the function the success it undoubtedly was. Although the actual profits were not disclosed, it is expected that the McGregor Fund will benefit materially from the entertainment which did not conclude until' the early hours. The president was assisted by Mrs. R. Williams in the, duties of M.C.
