The Ministry of Women

In a recently published report the commission appointed by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to consider the Ministry of Women in the Church of England has declared itself against their admission to the priesthood. It favours the recognition of deaconesses as members of the clergy and would not deny them to right to instruct, to baptize and to preach; it would also allow some lay women to preach. In the opinion of Dr. Matthews, Dean of St. Paul’s, w-ho dissents from the limitation of women’s work in the Church, there is no theological ease at all against the priesthood ior women. He maintains that there is a most important theological principle which ought to lead to the conclusion that the opening of the full ministry of the Church to women is required by the Christian doctrine of human nature. The general impression in British women’s circles seems to be that the report of the Archbishops’ Commission, although its recommendations fail to give full satisfaction to developing needs and opportunities, nevertheless marks the beginning of the end of the opposition of women to Holy Orders.
