Fowl Wheat to be Imported Duty Free
UNEXPECTED SHORTAGE OF HOME-GROWN
WELLINGTON, Sept. 30. “Contrary to expectations the quantity of locally-grown wheat available for poultry feeding purposes will not be sufficient to meet tho requirements of poultry farmers until next season's supplies eomo ou the market,” said Hou. R. Masters, filinister of Industries and Commerce, iu. a statement to-day. “In order to jirotect the interests of poultry-keepers tho Government lias decided that a quantity of wheat sufficient to meet the requirements of tho industry up to December will be import ed from Australia and arrangements havo been put iu hand for shipments to bo made. Tho Government has agreed to allow this wheat to bo imported free of duty and primage. Thus the industry will bo assured of full supplies at prices not iu excess of those ruling at present. “It is considered existing stocks of wheat stjll held by tho Wheat Purchase Board, by farmers and by merchants in tho .South Island will bo sufficient to meet all demands thero and tlio importations are therefore being confined to tho North Island.
“It is expected the first shipments will arrivo iu Wellington about October 9, and Auckland about October 11, Now Plymouth about October 13, and Napier about October 2-1. Arrangements have been made for tho Wheat Purchase Board to attend to tho distribution of wheat on behalf of tho Government, and merchants should therefore make immediate application to the Wheat Purchase Board, Christchurch, for tho total quantity they require during the months of ' October and November.
