Important Road Deviation Proposed

BETWEEN ORINGI AND MAHARAHARA.

The announcement from Wellington on Saturday of work to be undertaken to climinato dangerous railway crossings throughout tho Dominion did not make it very clear as to what was intended in regard to Makarakara, where it was stated there are two crossings close together which arc to be eliminated bv a road deviation.

The position will bo more clear to users of tho main road, when it is explained that tho crossings are about one and a-half miles apart, one at the foot of the fiat about a mile beyoni the Oringi station, near Mr. Cullinane’s, and tho other beyond the Maharahara statiou, past Mr. J. Mo Nicol’s, at Waiaruhc.

Tho proposal is to deviate this portion of tho main road from Oringi to .Maharahara, taking it parallel to the railway line on the left-hand side, and coming out in the vicinity of Mr. A. Herbert’s residence at Maharahara. This will obviate the necessity of users of the main road traversing either of the present crossings. The deviation will involve a stretch of about one and three-quarter miles of new road, and negotiations are at present proceeding with the Woodvillc County Council in regard to tho necessary land required and a contribution towards the cost. The new scheme also involves tho erection of a new two-svay bridge over the Tc Baparapawai stream at Maharahara to replace the existing structure near Mr. McNieoll’s residence. This will be 115 feet long. Further southward, just past the existing crossing, near the junction of Heretaunga road, two new two-way bridges of about 20 feet spans are contemplated, while the road in this locality is to be raised to obviate flooding, which, particularly in the past winter, has occasioned much inconvenience to the local settlers. Tt is not definitely known at present when the work will be proceeded with, but when completed it should be a big improvement on the present route.
