Fine of £25 for Gaming Act Breach
TWO MEN BEFORE MAGISTRATE A fine of £25 each, was imposed on two young Palmerston North men when they appeared in tho Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North yesterday for a breach of the Gaming Act.
Stanley Reti'ow Gallichan, aged 20 years, was faced with using Carter’s hairdressing and tobacconist’s shop in Broadway as a common gaming-house, while Leslie William Carter was charged with, being the occupier, allowing the shop to be used as a common gaming house.
Mr Yortt appeared for accused, who both pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Biekerdike explained that both the young men had been found on the premises when the police had paid a visit. Gallichan had been found in ’ a specially constructed cubicle, which was fitted with telephone and radio. On tho table had been betting charts and other material. Carter had admitted knowing that betting was going on. Both accused had been candid to the police about the matter and it had been quite apparent that they had been carrying on tha business of bookmakers. The fine of £25 on each was imposed with costs 10s.
