Aokautere

From Our Own Correspondent. At a meeting of the Aokautere Miniature Rifle Club on Monday night, Mr J. Smith presided over a good attendance of members. Arrangements were finalised for a visit to the Ashhurst Defence Rifle Club to shoot on the open range. A return visit is to be arranged as early as possible. After some discussion as to a suitable date, it was agreed to hold a ladies’ night early next month, when it is hoped to hold competitions between two mixed teams. Preliminary arrangements wero discussed regarding the annual ball and presentation of trophies, to take place next month, when it is hoped that the club’s patron, Air Linklater, M.P., will be present to present tlie trophies won during the season. A strong committee was set up and the club hopes to make this year's ball a big success. It was unanimously decided not to hold any competition in conjunction with the ball. Tho following scores were registered at the weekly practice of the Aokautere .Miniature Ilifio Club: A. Brill 69, 70, 139; A. Hopcroft.69, 69, 13S; H. Hill 69, 69, 138; ,f. AVoods 68. 69, 137; J. Atkinson 69, 68, ] 37; a Crowe 67, 69, 136; At. Kristensen 67, 68, 135; P. Field 67, 68, 135; L. Hastings 6S, 67, 135; L. Rix 66, 69, 135; C. Baker 66, 68, 154; F. Judd 67. 67, 134; L. Craven 66, 67, 133; R. Brill 67. 66, 133; N. Hopcroft 66, 67, 133; AV. R. Hopcroft 65, 67, 132; J. Smith 66, 64, 130; T. Morgan 6-1, 64, 128: AV. Pinfold 66, 58, 124; S. Dudiield 62, 60, 122. A start has been made with the surfacing of the new tennis court, a “working bee” having been busy last week, carting ciay. It is the intention of the club t.o put the court down in clay for this season.

A further euchre party and dance to augment the tennis club's funds, was held on Wednesday last, when, in spite of the boisterous weather conditions, there was a good attendance. The prizes in the card section were won by Mrs Mitchell and Miss M. Anderson (consolation) in the ladies’ section. Mr Davey and Mr ,T. Lankshear had to cut oft for the lirst place in the men’s section, tho latter proving the winner, while the consolation prize went to Mr L. Craven. A homemade supper was provided by the cluh members, after which the floor was cleared for dancing. During the supper interval, it was announced that Mr J.. Brill was the competition winner. Music for the dancing was kindly supplied by Misses .T. Burling and M. Anderson, Messrs It. Brill and X,. Craven, while Mr I,’. .Tudd capably carried out the duties oi M.C. The big pine trees fronting the school, which were recently donated to the oil.': relief fuel depot, have, been felled and carted away. The workmen finished at the school on Wednesday last. It is understood that the relief fuel depot benefited to the extent of several cords ol firewood. The big stumps have beer, taken out and the ground cleared, makinp a vast improvement in tho appearance oi the school grounds, while there is a very noticeable difference in ' the amount ol light received in the front class room.
