St. Andrew’s Ladies’ Guild

HAPPY YEAR REPORTED Tho annual meeting of St. Andrew’s Ladies’ Guild was well' attended in the Memorial hall yesterday, the retiring president, Mrs M. Aitehison, presiding. The hall was charmingly decorated as usual with Iceland poppies, japonica, daphno and camellias.

Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Bowden and J. McLeod, while helpers who served afternoon tea were Mesdames D. Crawford, C. Baylcy, W. Milverton, M. Boyd, R. Stewart, J. Butcher, A. M. Heist aud \V. R. Taylor.

The annual report, presented by the secretary (Mrs F. Gorrand) stated that the year had been a particularly happy one, the attendances having been splendid and a spirit of friendliness and pleasure characterising every meeting. “Much of the success is due to tho enthusiasm and energy of our president, Mrs Aitehison,” stated the report. A number of new members bad been welcomed. Tho programme had been varied and enjoyable. “Our guild is mainly social,” the report continued, “but we endeavour to bo of service, too, and through tho year have sent letters and flowers to sick members, und Christmas gifts to the sick and aged of the congregation. We were glad to bo able to supply the curtains for the Girls' Bible Class rooms and tho Sunday school primary room. Vi 1 e extend our thanks to all who have helped to make our afternoons so successful —Mrs B. F. Bari'ow (pianist), hostesses, helpers, and those who have contributed to the programme, the ladies of the congregation and Mr Longney (caretaker). Wo also thank Mrs Rutherford for a fernstand and Mrs R. D. Knight for a large kitchen kettle.”—The report was adopted as read. Speaking to the report, Mrs Aitehison said she felt the meetings had been worth while. Their guild was a social one, aud she hoped they had lived up to that name. “If we are sociable in ourselves everything else must go all right, said Mrs Aitehison. She said she felt they owed a < T ood deal to their minister and his wife. It was just over a year since Rev. Mr Hubbard and Mrs Hubbard had come to Palmerston North, and in that time they had endeared themselves to all.

Mr Hubbard said that if the spiritual side of tho church was lacking, they would not be able to meet in a social way; be felt tho social side of tho church was important.

Mrs P. Ferguson (treasurer) presented the balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance. This was adopted. Mr Hubbard remarked that the flowers the guild had distributed, an item for which he noticed in tho balance-sheet, had been appreciated.

Mr Hubbard presided during the election of officers, which resulted as follows: —Patroness, Mrs J. Hubbard; president, Mrs M. Aitehison; vice-pre-sidents, Mesdames A. J. Graham, J. Murray, B-. D. Knight, F. O. Wilkinson; secretary, Mi’3 J. B. Gerrand; treasurer, Mrs P. Ferguson; committee, Mesdames N. Wagl'an, Bowden, T. L. Seator, McLeod, D. Millar, Wallace Smith, C. Williamson, J'. Sargent and I. Campbell. Mrs Aitehison was congratulated on her re-election and work during the

past year, and tho work of other officers was eulogised. An inspiring address on “Magnanimity” was given by Mr Hubbard. Mrs Lascelles proposed the vote of thanks to Mr Hubbard and Mrs Gerrand to the hostesses. Reference was made to tho drama circle, which was fovmed during tho year by the guild. It entertained the guild one afternoon and it is hoped that it will shortly appear before the footlights, which event is eagerly anticipated. Mrs G. C, Petersen is producer.
