From Our Own; Correspondent, Borough Council.

At the last fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council there was present the Mayor (Mr. E. Butt), Crs. Hyd’e, Clayton, Thwaites, J. Curran Sr., J. Curran, Jr., Roach, Mason and Lind. Tho Piimmorton-Paekakarlki Main Highways Association wrote pointing out the advantages of the proposed deviation connecting Paekakariki with Wellington and asking for the support of the borough in furthering the scheme. From the Prime Minister came a letter describing the Silver Jubilee. Celebrations to be caried out in New Zealand and requesting that the Borough do all in Its power to assist in affording the citizens of Shannon an opportunity of celebrating the event.

From the District Health Officor reporting on certain drainage needing repairs, milk sampling, removal of fish shop and inspection of food shops. A further lengthy report was appended covering the work of tho officer during the year. He pointed out that during that time a total mileage in connection with Shannon was 1015. Infectious diseases . for , tlio year were less than lasi year. Ail unemployed man wrote pointing out that, owing to not being able, to report because of illness he was losing his week’s Wages. He pointed out that ho had reported only a few hours later than the specified time.—Agreed that. Borough support; his ease. The- ranger reported the impounding of 19 head of stock and the removal of 93. Being tho last meeting of the Couneil. tho Mayor thanked the Councillors f6r the work they had done for the boroujfft and for the assistance, they had rendered him, Cr. Hyde expressed/appreciation of the able manner in which his Worship had controlled the meetings of the‘ Council. Other Councillors also parsed congratulatory remarks and expressed the hope that his Worship would again "occupy the Mayoral chair during the next term qf .office. Tlio staff was also thanked for the good work done. Plunket Society.

The Annual meeting of the .Shannon branch of the Plunket Society'was held In the Plunket rooms, the president, Mrs. Easton, being in the chair. The president’s report was as follows: —“It' was with regret that we received notice of the transfer of Nurse-Norris to. a position in Auckland. She was with us eight years and always proved-herself a conscientious and painstaking officer. A social afternoon was tendered her by tho committee members and mothers, when opportunity was taken: to record appreciation of her services. Nurse Livingstone was appointed to fill the vacancy and we tender her our thanks for he? service's which arc much appreciated by mothers and are reflected in the general ivefi being of tho babies and older children under her care. The- Board oi Governors of the T. G. McCarthy Trust once more receives our grateful thank's for their donation of £2O; also the Borough Council, for a grant of £2/2/» and the Shannon Sports Club for £l/1/-. The thanks of tho Committee are duo to all subscribing members; to Mr Orortquest for auditing tho books; to Mr J. A. Roach for supplying lunch to the Nurse; To Mr. T. King for free cartage; Mrs. Semple for attending to the room and to ail who assisted in any way.”

Nurse Livingstone reported ■ for . the year as follows: Visits to Shannon- 51; visits to homes 118; adults to rooms 595; babies to rooms 441; older children 50; total 989. New cases 27. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mrs. J. A. Easton; vice-presidents, Mesdames C. Cronquest, Harper and Edgington; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. A. G. Mason; associate secretary, Mrs. Semple; general committee, Mesdames J. R. Robinson, C. Goodwin, S. Barber,, E. Hyde, Waring-Taylor, L. H. Best, Edwards, Pallant, H. McKenzie, W. Radford; Advisory board, Messrs B. J. Brain; E. T. Moody, A. E. Hyde. T. C. Thwaites, and J. Aim; Hon. auditor, .Mr. C. M. Cronquest. A vote of sympathy was accorded Sirs H. Barber in the passing of her mother. Subscriptions of 5/- each were received with thanks from Mesdames Harper, Edwards and Campbell. Anzac Day.

Anzac Day was celebrated in Shannon on similar lines to that of former years. School children. Returned Soldiers, Gii Guides, South African veterans ■ and parents met at the school,' where it was intended an address should bo delivered to the pupils, but owing, to tlio approach of heavy rain the address was dispensed with, and the procession headed; by tlio Levin Band, marched to the Cenotaph where ' the ' laying-on of wreaths 'took place. Wreaths for the local bodies, school children, staff school committee. R.S.A., etc., were made by ' the senior pupils of the public school. From the Cenotaph the procession marched to the theatre where an impressive service was held. The service was conducted by'-Capt. Stevens of tho Levin Salvation Army-, and a stirring address was delivered by tffij Rev. Brown of Foxton. Music for the hymns was supplied by tho Levin band. The. Last Post was sounded by Bugler Pickering. At the end of the service, Mr. Harper, president of the R.S.A., thanked all those who had assembled to do honour in memory of those fellow comrades who had gone before. Thanks were also due to Mr. Hyde for the use of the Theatre; the Levin Band,' tho Girl Guides and the school children for the sale of poppies. Borough Council.

Owing to just the required number of candidates being nominated for the Borough Council and -for tho Mayoralty, no election will be held this year. Those Nominated are as follows: Mayor, Mr. E. Butt (sitting Mayor)Councillors: Messrs J. Curran Sr., J. Curran Jr., J. Roach, AV. Clayton, R. Bind, T. Tliwaites, A. Hyde and H. M. Mead. The only difference in tho Councillors being. H. . M. .Mead who will fill the vacancy caused by A. G. Mason not seeking re-election.
