Quiet of Dairy Board Election Disturbed
MR DERMER’S REMARKS CAUSE COMMENT IN TARANAKI
Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night
Speaking to a large gathering of Taranaki dairymen at Stratford on Saturday to hear tho views of the various candidates seeking election to the Dairy Board as representing tho middle ward, Mr. C. G.. C. Dormer (Fcilding) stated that speaking witn a full sense of responsibility he could inform the meeting that Mr. T. A. "Winks, the Hawcru member of the existing Control Board, would be one of the Government’s nominees for the new board and that the cheese section of the industry, therefore, was assured of representation on the new board, even if a representative of this section did not gain a seat at the election.
The remarks caused considerable comment in view of the Government’s undertaking''not to make • nominations until after the election.
Commenting on the position, the Taranaki Daily News editorially says that a grave question of principle is involved if the election campaigns are to be conducted on such a basis. Apart from the questions of parochialism a leakage of information and other aspects of the incident, demands a pliiin statement from the Prime Minister as to whether Cabinet had departed from its original intention of postponing the selection of State representatives until after the election and if so, why dairy companies were not advised so that candidatures may be revised if considered necessary.
