The New Zealander As a Motor Driver

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I read in yesterday’s paper an article by a Mr. Neill saying New Zealand motorists have got a lot to learn and that the drivers in England arc above all good drivers. Now, Sir, I say (hat the New' Zealand drivers will hold their own with any drivers in the world. To say if a New Zealand driver was driving at Homo ho would find himself hopelessly stranded against the kern, or picking up the remains of his “bus” on the roadside is all bunkum. How about during the war? Didn’t the New Zealand transport drivers hold their own? Of course they did. Has Mr. Neill ever been up on some of the back country roads and seen the big lorries loaded \rflli timber or big logs going to.. the mill and the

double-deck lorries loaded with lambs on their way to the works? They get there and they don’t loaf on the road. 1 think if you put some ot the English drivers ou the road and asked them to keep up with some of our New Zealand drivers you would be looking down some gully for them. Then take the taxi drivers in our cities. It is wonderful to see them getting through the traffic and you don’t often see them picking up the remains ot their bus. No, Sir, I don’t think New Zealand has much to learn in the way of driving a motor. I will admit there are quite a lot of drivers who should never have a license but on the whole they will hold their own.—l am, etc., N.Z. MOTORIST. Aptli,. February 15, I 935
