Made to Live Again

CENTURY-OLD SCENES MELBOURNE, Nov. ID. Whereas a few aborigines watched the Hcnt.ys, the founders of Melbourne, land at Portland from the Thistle a century ago, thousands of well-dressed citizens gazed from tho cliffs and shore as scenes of a. century ago were mndo to live again. Every vantage point was crowded. A. strange contrast was presented by a tiny ketch representing the Thistle and (.ho towering hulls of the Sussex and Canberra. When the Thistle came to anchor a boat, was lowered and a party dressed in costumes of tho period caino ashore. A weird assortment of cattle, dogs, and farming implements were ceremoniously landed with _ some unrehearsed incidents such as one steer fouling tho anchor chains and later colliding with a motor-boat, which was incongruously on the scene. The Duke of Gloucester was keenly interested in tho proceedings. Airs Coster, of Nelson, New Zealand, Stephen Henty’s only surviving daughter, was later presented to him. Tho Duke remained at Portland throughout tho day, leaving in tho evening. The service at dawn was conducted by the Archbishop of Alelbourne, the Most Rev. F. W. Head, the Bishop of Ballarat, Rt. Rev. P. C. T. Crick, Rev. J. Afackenzic, Rev. Mr Warren and Rev. Air. Afartin. Archbishop Head, in his address, said: "We should give thanks for our Empire, our Afonarchy, our Church, and our British character.” Ho added: "You people of Poriland have given a lead to tho city how to celebrate a centenary.” Bishop Crick spoke of those who, in humble confidence and venturesome faith, landed there a century ago and established under tho Southern Cross a a new home. “Wo thank God that those who followed built faithfully on tho foundations so well' and truly laid,” he added.
