MEETING OP THE COUNCIL The Kiwitea County Council met at. Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLeau (chairman) presiding. Thero were also present: Crs. T. D. AVood, F. E. Tappin, AV. P. Shaw, F. 0. Stack, .T. A. T. Brown, .J. H. Williamson, W. Hair and N. V. Shannon. County Finances The treasurer reported on the county finances as follows:—County fund account (dr.), £GOO 10s Id; employees' special loan accommodation account (cr.), £2O 9s lid; ditto, fixed deposit account (cr.), £700; Kimbolton cemetery account (cr.), £l9 15s lOd; land fund account (cr.), £97 10s Id; Waituua comctery account (cr.), £-1 3s lOd; Kangiwabia cemetery account (cr.), £9 5s sd. Eicling Accounts Cease At a special meeting held prior to dealing with the ordinary business, the council confirmed the resolution passed at its last meeting dealing with the abolition of riding accounts. Bate Position Tho county rate position was reported upon as follows:—General' rates: Struck, £-1733 10s Id; paid, £I4OO 0s 7d; outstanding, £3327 9s Cd; specials (including hospital), struck, £4017 ISs lid; paid, £1173 17s 9d; outstanding, £3474 Is 2d; arrears (three years, all sources), £IS7S 15s 8d; paid, £SS9 5s 9d; outstanding, £lOlO 9s lid. Correspondence The following correspondence was dealt with: — From tho Public Works Department, advising payment of subsidy on maintenance of main highways in the county for tho period 9/7/34 to 8/9/34, amounting to £317 7s 5d, —Received. From tho Commissioner of Crown Lands, forwarding schedui'o of ‘thirds’ accrued from Crown sections in the county for the half-year ending 30/9/34. —Received. From the Whakatane County Council, requesting this council’s support to a resolution regarding markets for primary products.—Received. From tho trustee, estate of H. C. AYilson, deceased, requesting permission to erect private tolcphono linos across the Upper Kawhatau road.— Granted. From Mr C. Smith, drawing the council’s attention to the condition of the road leading to his property in the Upper Kawhatau Valley. —Receiving attention. From tho AA’aimairi County Council', with reference to tho proposal to amend tho voting qualifications in counties by substituting universal suffrage for the present system, and urging tho council to vigorously oppose any alteration to the existing county voters’ franchise.—Agreed to oppose the proposed altera!ion. From the Public Works Department, advising that the Main Highways Board would be making a tour of portion of the North Island, and would bo pleased to meet representatives of this council at the borough council offices, Fcilding, on December 1. —Crs. Stack, Hair and Tappin will represent the council at the meeting.
From tho New Zealand Farmers’ Union (Auckland province), forwarding statement with regard to the Dairy Industry Commission’s report.—Received.
From the Public Works Department, advising that .the Main Highways Board had decided that the recent increase of 5 per cent, in rates of pay would apply as from April I, and enclosing schcdulo of the new standard rates of pay.—Received.
Overseer’s Report The county overseer (Mr F. H. Eggers) reported as follows: Chelto.nham riding: All sections of the main highways and the Cheltenham Cross road had received frequent attention from the grader. It was necessary to cart out another 200 cubic yards of surfacing metal on tho lower section of Ivimbolton road (No. 52 main highway). The roadman had attended to the usual maintenance work in cleaning out water-tables, repairs to road surface, and assisting with the delivery of metal, iu the Kiwi tea riding. Kiwitea riding: .Road, surfaces had been kept trimmed by tho grader, while the roadman had assisted with the delivery of metal and tho work of cleaning out drains and water-tables on Bcacousfield Valley road. The following quantities of maintenance metal had been carted out: Coulter's line, Cheltenham-Kiwitca riding, 152 cubic yards; No. 52 main highway, Iviwitea, 65 cubic yards. Further carting of maintenance metal on this section of the main highway was now in progress.
Waituna riding: All the new maintenance metal recently carted out on the section of the No. 377 main highway had been trimmed by the grader. Tho roadman was at present engaged carting out a quantity of clay blinding for this section of main highway, and assisting with similar work on the section of the No. 377 main highway, Pakihikura riding. Tho roadman had attended to repair work on the clay section of tho Alangapipi road. As a cream lorry was making use of this road ho would suggest that a limited quantity of metal bo carted out to improve tho worst sections. Ongo riding: The section of tho No. 377 main highway had been kept in fair order by tho grader; also Williamson’s road west. Improvements by way of earth banking lmd been carried out near the Waituna township on the No. 377 main highway. All work in connection with improvements to the cemetery grounds, Waituna, had been completed. The roadman had attended to the usual maintenance work on roads other than main highways in this riding; also assisting with similar work in the Cheltenham and Waituna ridings. Kimbolton riding: The roadmen had been engaged most of their time with the carting out of maintenance metal in the Kiwitea and Kimbolton ridings. The section of the main highways and Branch’s Toad had been trimmed by the grader plant. The following quantities of maintenance had been delivered: No. 52 main highway, 15 cubic yards; Mcßeath’s line, 84$ cubic yards;
Forest road, 75 yards; total, 174* cubic yards.
Peep o’ Day riding: The usual maintenance work had been attended to by tho roadman throughout tho riding. The contractor had delivered 222 J cubic yards of maintenance metal on the section of the No. 52 main high-
way. Pakihikura riding: The section of tho No. 377 main highway had been trimmed by tho grader as well as about one mile of the Sandon Block road. Tho roadman had attended to the usual maintenance work. A few yards of rough metal had been carted out to improve a bend on the Ohinga-iti-Pemberton road.
Eangiwakia riding: Tho section of the No. 52 main highway had been trimmed by the grader. Tho contractor delivered, the following quantities of maintenance metal: No, 52 main highway, 520 cubic, yards; Mangoira road, 100 cubic yards. The roadmen had attended to the usual maintenance work throughout the riding, and assisting with carting out of 41 cubic yards of pot-hole repair metal on tho Main South road and 22 cubic yards op the' Mangahuia road west. A small timber bridge on the Mangahuia road west required minor repairs and would bo attended to at an early dale. The road surface, McKean’s hill, was being prepared for a light surfacing with line metal.
Haulapu riding: The roadmen had been engaged removing slips and cleaning out water-tables on. tho section or the ~0.52 main highway, Lagoon, Cliff and Kawhatau roads and Bounor’s hill. A start had been mads tarring the bridge recently constructed over tho Mangakukcke stream. The timber for constructing a small stock bridge near Mrs Hall’s homestead was to hand and the work of erecting the bridge would be put in hand when the metal carting was completed. The roadmen in the Upper Kawhatau w-cre at present engaged filling in ruts and general maintenance work on the clay road giving access to Mr Con. Smith’s residence. Tho work of renewing the old timber culvert on this road would be commenced as soon as the necessary pipes camo to hand. The Auputa clay road was at present dry, and with the exception of a few ruts on some of the worst places was not in. bad condition for motoring. Tho road would bo trimmed by the grader at an early date.
