Modernising the Coastal Defences

SECURING AN OFFICER FROM ENGLAND Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. To implement tlio Government's decision to modernise and extend the coast defences of the Dominion, it has been decided to obtain on loan from the War Office the services of an officer of the Royal’ Engineers with technical qualifications and experience in fortress engineering. The Minister for Defence (Hon. J G. Cobbe) stated this evening that reports before- him showed that no artillery or engineer officer now serving in New Zealand had had experience in such a position. The work to be undertaken in New Zealand involved the design of emplacements, in addition to the siting and installation of both range-finding and electric light equipment, as well as guns, and in this work it was essential that, the officer responsible should bo fully conversant with modern practice. Mr Cobbe said that the officer selected by the War Office would bo accompanied by a warrant officer, who would act as his assistant in supervising the initial lay-out and construction of the works. Advice had been received that the War Office was prepared to provide the services of a qualified officer, but no information was yet available as to the name of the man selected.
