Winter Racing at Foxton

Good Fields Carded for To-day’s Meeting Tlic roxtou Racing Club’s winter meeting is being held on the Foxton racecourse to-day, and as there is every prospect that the weather will bo delightfully fine, the meeting should prove a popular one with racing enthusiasts. Good fields have been accepted for each and every event, and the racing should be particularly interesting.

Tlio first event, tho Maiden States, is due to start at 12 noon, and tho other races will follow at 40-minuto intervals. Thero are 15 acceptors for the Maiden States, and Colossal, Count Rousillon and D’Acro ran well forward at Otati. Et’niop and Wyndalo havo shown a bit of pace at times, while Lord Moutoa’s effort will not bo lost sight of when the prospects of tho various starters aro 'being weighed. When tho machino closes it may bo found that tho public have gone for Lord Moutoa, Ethiop and Colossal. Blacksmith. has pride of placo in tho Hurdles, and if ho goes to tho post 11.5 should not stop him from talcing a prominent part in the race. Transact w r on the hurdles each day at Otaki, and no won well, the second day’s effort being an impressive one. Ho should bo one of tho fancied horses to-day. Manawatu ran third on tho second day at Otaki, and the going will bo more to his liking at Eoxton. Huntiquo started each day at Otaki, finishing fourth on tho first day and fifth on the second. Three that may bo in demand to-day are Transact, Blacksmith, and Manawatu. The Himatangi Hack is the next, and with Pladio, Gladium, Lapel and Bon Rapide with good recent form, and Pheon and King Tliomond improving, the finish should bo a good one. Tho betting is likely to take a wide range, but most support may be forthcoming for Pladio, Lapel, Bon Rapide. There is a handy field of nine carded for tho Eoxton Cup. Arikira is topweight, and although ho may be all the better for tlio race, ho is on hi 3 homo course and cannot be overlooked. Beryl Latour is next, and she must be conceded a chance with 5.4. La Poupeo won at Bulls but failed to make a showing in tho heavy going at Otaki. She should do better to-day. Atholspear ran second to La Poupee at Bulls, and ho indicated that ho is capable of getting another stake beforo the winter season is through. Taitoru ran in the principal handicap tie second day at Otaki and finished third to Aesculus and Nightguard, and ho did not handle tho going too well. Of the others Saltpot, who led to the straight in tho Raukawa Handicap at ,Otaki, and Chopin make most appeal. Thero may bo a surprise in store for tho punters,-but Beryl Latour may bo preferred to La Poupeo and Atholspear. Tho Carnarvon Hack has drawn a good field. The presenco of All Spirit, Amyril, Hark Eorrard, Bonny Vale, Dorado, Windward, Boudoir, Ebeum and Purse should make for a closo and exciting finish, and threo that may bo in demand are Hark Eorrard, Ebeum, anti Dorado. Tho Kebbell Memorial should bo another good race. Eoreign Queen showod a return to form at Otaki when she finished second to Good Hunting. She pulled up lame, however, but her presence in this field suggests that tho injury was not serious. Princess Doreen ran two good races at Otaki despite tho heavy going, and she can bo expected

to run prominently to-day. The same may be said of Lady Nan. The public may go for Foreign Queen, Ida Merling, and Princess Doreen. The programme will conclude with the Harrington Hack, a flutter over 5} furlongs. Tho post positions will havo a bearing on the result, but Bon Rapide, Bellbroney and Wasteland may be preferred to tho others. Riding Engagements. Tho following riding engagements have been announced for to-day:— A. McDonald: Blacksmith. , K. Voitro: King Thomond, La Poupee, Wasteland. R. Reed: Bon Rapide (twice), All Spirit, Lord Moutoa. W. J. Broughton: Count Rousillon, Boudoir, Lalla Quex. L. H. Jones: Dick Whittington, Ebeum, Merlyn, Moatoa. S.
