Obituary

JIBS. ANNIE DE CLEENE, Deep regret will be felt by many to learn, of the death of Mrs. Annie De Cleene, which occurrod at an early hour on Sunday. Mother of a well-lciiown sporting family, and an ardent follower of her children's activities, Mrs. Do Cloeno was born at Stratford, Essex, and it was as a child that Mrs. De Cleene accompanied her parents to New Zealand almost six decades ago. The new settlers made Dunedin their iirst home, but later romovod to Christchurch, and it was from the City of the Plains that the decoascd lady came north to be married in Wellington prior to accompanying her husband to the Manawatu 41 years ago. Mr. De Cleene, who was a buildox by occupation, mado Tiakitahuna his homo for some 2(5 years,, and whilo rosident there Mrs. Do Cleene took an active interest in the affairs of tho neighbourhood,having been a member of the School Conimitteo and a member of the ladies’ committee which was instrumental in effecting the erection of the capacious hall there. For the past 15 years Mrs De Cleene had conducted a farm at the foot of Jickcl street. The family have played prominent roles in sport in the city for a number of years, Mrs. Wickham, a daughter, having represented Manawatu on the hockey hold, while the sons have gained honours in wrestling, boxing, and football, .Eobert (“Bob”) being a well-known Manawatu representative amateur matman. The family left to mourn the loss of their mother is composed of four sons and four daughters, the members being Messrs. William, Eobert, .Tohn and Albert Do Cleeno, Mrs. Or. Schwamm, Mrs. T. Wickham, and Miss Eleanoro Do Cloene (all being residents of Palmerston North) and Mrs J. Kuch (Wellington). There arc also 14 grandchildren. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, when a large company of local and district residents and friends attended to pay their last respects. Tho remains were laid to rest in the Palmerston North Cemetery alongside those of her husband, who predeceased his wife some years ago, Canon G. Y. Woodward conducting tho graveside service, while members of the Oddfellows’ Lodge, of which organisation Mrs. De Cleene and her late husband were both members, participated in the service. The floral tributes rverc many and beautiful, and included several from local sporting bodies.
