Pahiatua

From Our Own Correspondent. AI. the tenth annual spring flower showheld at Pongaroa Mesdames A. East and K. L. Warren, oil Paliiatua, assisted by judging and acting as steward respectively in tho cookery classes. After a long and painful illness the death occurred on Friday last at his late residence, Tararua street, of an old resident of this district. Mr. Matthew Qillinan, at the age of 7S years, who at one time had been an employee of the Pahiatua County Council. He is survived by hls widow, two daughters, Mrs. B. J. Colder, of Woodville, and Mrs. T. Ilickey, of .Hastings, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Mr. William Brown, a well-known settler of Mangatainoka, and father of Mr. W. T. Brown, Paliiatua, was knocked down by a. motor vehicle on the main road near ids home about 7 p.m. on Sunday last. He evidently lay unconscious for sonic time and then managed to struggle to liis home though suffering from A fractured and lacerated leg and serious head injuries. He is now an inmate of Lite Pahial.ua Hospital and his condition is as satisfactory as it can be under the circumstances. The death, has occurred at the Pahiatua. Hospital of Mr. John Francis Treder, of Ridge road, Konini, aged 63 years, who was seriously injured through falling off a. load of hay on 'Wednesday morninglast, liis neck being broken. It was some three hours later that he was found by a, neighbour, Mr. D. Brosnahan, paralysed, but able to speak. He was conveyed to tho Paliiatua Hospital where lie lingered until early on Monday morning. An inquest was held before the District Coroner, Mr. J. .D. Wilson, when a verdict of accidental death caused by a fall from a. dray which broke deceased's neck, no blame being attachable to anyone, was returned. Tho late Mr.. Treder is survived by a widow and family of four, Messrs George and James Treder and Mrs. F, B. Connor, all of Konini, and Mrs. J. J. Brosnahan, of Mangamnirc. Mrs. Elizabeth A, Hyland lies seriously ill at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. T. Ruskell, Hall’s road, Pahiatua. Mrs. Hyland, who is aged 81, lives alone at Kumeroa, and about C a.rn. on Thursday, when on her way to open her back door, slipped and fell, breaking her hip. After some time tho old lady managed to drag herself to a. side door and open it, where she was not discovered until mid-day when a grocer calling for orders discovered her lying on the floor. He rushed for assistance and she was conveyed by the ambulance to her daughter's home, it being almost. 13 hours after the accident; before she was settled there, a most trying and painful experience for one oi er years. She is suffering severely from shock hut is as well as can be expected under the circumstances.

Oil Tuesday evening last a. meeting of the stewards of the Pahiatua Racing Club was held, Mrs. H. McSherry, president, being jn the chair. The dates suggested by the Racing Conference, for Paliiatua’s two-day meeting, January 31 and February 1, were not considered suitable and it was decided to apply to the Conference for Friday and Saturday, April 2 1 and 2S, dates which seem to fit in with other meetings quite suitably. Mr. Chas Irving presented a. balance sheet for the recent Race Club ball, which showed a credit balance. The president paid a tribute to the work of the special ball committee, to the ladies for the supper arrangements and delicacies provided and especially complimented the two young men who had undertaken the big task of decorating the hall, 'Messrs Ron and Cyril Smith, who had carried out the scheme in a most successful manner. The work of Mr. Chas. Irving was referred to by- the president and other stewards, and he was asked to accept an honorusaun. a small token of (heir appreciation. Miss Dorothy Wage, Island Bay, who has been a visitor to Pahiatua for some weeks, returned to her home on Thursday last. Mrs. J. !D. (2. Crewe, who was called to Auckland suddenly on account of the serious illness of a relative, hopes to be able to return to Pahiatua at the end of the month, her relative now being on the road to recovery.

Mrs. F. Burrell, Levin, was a. visitor to Pahiatua for the purpose of assisting with the annual bulb and spring flower show, and was the guest of Mrs. W. H. Mureh, Her son, Mr. E. Burrell, returned to Levin with her, owing to being ordered several months’ rest on account of ill-health. Mrs. W. T. Boyd, "VVakeman street, has been spending a holiday with friends in Wellington. . Mrs. .T. Clulow, formerly of Rangecale, Pahiatua, is visiting the district again after an extended tour abroad. Miss Freda Harris, head of the showroom staff of the W.F.C.A., has Severed her connection with the firm on account of her approaching marriage. Mr. A. A. Vaughan, manager of the local branch, on behalf of her fellow employees, made a presentation to Miss Harris as a token of esteejh and good wishes. Miss J. P. Thomson, of the firm of George and Doughty, Wellington, has been appointed to fill tho vacancy caused through, the resignation of Miss Haros. Mr. Cecil Roy, formerly of the Pahiatua branch, but now at the head office, of the Union Bank in Wellington, Is spending his vacation with his parents at Short road, Manga.tainoka, Mrs. If. Paterson, district president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, was a visitor to Feildtng for the annual district convention held there last
