A light, breeze was blowing when the first man left Sockburn, but the riders found the warm w'eather rather trying.
A. Parkin, A. Day, E. Day, Robertson, Matthews and Adamson were the first to reach Ashburton, and turned for home at 12.43 p.m., having covered the outward journey iri 2 hours 33 minutes.
Coping’s ma,cliinc met with a bad mishap u,t Rakaia and he suffered a badly cut hand in the accident. McAlister made the pace too hot 1o last for about 40 miles, and turned it in turning back for Christchurch.
