The August meeting of the Opiki IV.I. attracted a. good attendance of members. The president. (Mrs. Claridge) was in the chair. The motto for the day was unusually appropriate, “Theres’ a good time coming, but it’s a good time coming.” After the singing of the Institute Ode, the usual businness was dealt with. Included in the. correspondence received was a letter from the Shannon district nurse expressing appreciation of the peggy square quilt received from the Opiki W.I. members. It was decided to hold a fancy dress ball for tho Opiki school children and members decided by a small majority to hold the function in the Tokornaru hall on September. 8. Mr. Sherriff, of Levin, demonstrated the working and appliances of the modern sewing machine, and at the conclusion was accorded a vote of thanks, carried by acclamation. The monthly competition, “the best article made from two 25 lb. or one 501 b. four bag” brought forth some excellent work. The .winning articles especially , were particularly worthy of mention, showing what can be done with the humble flour bag. The results were: Miss Silvia Irwin (duchess set) 1, Miss' Beryl' Seifert (tea wagon cloth) 2, Mrs. Webb (tray cloth) 3. The winner of the competition held for W.I. funds was Mrs. R. Horne. The 3d bring and exchange stall for, the Federation funds did' good business as well as provoking much amusement. A large number of parcels of clothing and groceries for the relief depot in Shannon were also brought to tho meeting. During the afternoon Miss K. Williams rendered a pianoforte solo which was much appreciated. The usual dainty afternoon tea was a pleasant diversion. The next meeting of the W.I. will be held at the garden of Mr. G. Larsen, of Tane road, who has kindly offered to give a practical demonstration and lecture on bulb culture. It. is to bo hoped that the weather clerk will be kind on September 16 'as many of the garden enthusiasts among the members arc looking forward to this day, when the bulbs will be at their best. Tho hostesses for September will be Mrs. R. Horne, Mrs. J. Hansen, Mrs. Jensen and Mrs. Kars, while tho competition is to be for the best plate of plain scones without butter or cream, electric stoves, wood or coni stoves’. Tho Linton girls' basketball team visited the Opiki school on Thursday last to play a return match with tho local team. Linton proved the winners after a good game. Miss A. 'Whiteman, of Alfredlon, is visiting her sister, .Mrs. J. Hansen, of Makerua road. Mrs. VV. Jackson and her daughters, Misses Bettit and Ina Jackson, are Visiting -Wellington for the holidays. Miss Perrett, of Wellington, is staying with her parents, Mr .and ill's. Perrett, of Wilson’s road, during the holidays. Mrs. -Ferris, of Masterton, is visiting her daughters in Ashley road. Miss Joan Allwright, of the Palmerston North Girls’ High .School, is staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. Allwilght, during the school vacation.
