Ohakea

From Our Own-Correspondent. ( Tho Ohakea Public hall was taxed to capacity on Wednesday evening on the occasion of the Ohaicea school children’s fancy dross ball. The hall looked a pretty sight with decorations of streamers, flowers and greenery. Added to tills were- the gay colours and effects <sl’ the fancy dresses of the • children. At 7.45 o'clock the children led off with the grand march which proved to bo very intricate but was performed with precision and finish. This was proved by ’ the applause . which greeted its conclusion. The children’s- dancing then proceeded with folk dances, polkas, schottisches and vaieta waltzes-until 9.45. Tho' folk dances- performed were “Toast to King Gustav,”-" "Nino Pins,” "Half Moon,, ■and “Calopede,; and again in these tho children acquitted themselves well At the conclusion of the children’s part, supper was served by’ an energetic ladies’ committee headed by' Mrs. F. O. Bailey. Adult dancing was then continued until 1.30 a.m., .the music being supplied by a •professional orchestra. Before the conclusion of the childrcn.’s dancing, Mr, I. N. - Leet,' on behalf of the school committee, briefly thanked the ladies’ committee and all other helpers for their assistance. Prizes presented for ticket.' selling were .won by Miss Joyce Pedersen and Russell Simpson. ■■ Later in the evening Mr. F. O. Bailey, chairman of tho school committee, proposed a vote of thanks to. tlie teachers, Mr. I. N. Leet and Miss E. Price, and also Miss I. Ellery, for l raining the children so well. Tho music for the children’s dances was played by Mr. I. N. Leet. As a result of the function tlie school funds will benefit considerably. Mr. D. Capstiek acted as M.C. Masters, snow man B. Matthews, Early Victorian. On Thursday afternoon the Clydesdale school hockey and football teams journeyed to Ohakea. to play teams from the local school. After a close and exciting game the Clydesdale girls defeated Ohakea I—o, Kathleen Maxwell scoring for the winners. The football match was lo decide who should hold the Ralph Brown cup for the ensuing year, each side being equal in points in the competition. Clydesdale kicked off against a slight breeze, and after some minutes’ play McKenzie scored for, Clydesdale. The kick failed. ■ Offside play gave Ohakea three points by. means of a penalty by Hazlewood. Even play followed until Walker secured from a kick when the. rebound beat his opponent and he raced down the line to score under the posts. Hazlewood converted. Ohakea S, Clydesdale 3. Offside play by Ohakea gave Quinlan a successful shot at goal. Ohakea S Clydesdale C. From a passing rush Quinlan scored. The kick failed and Clydesdale were leading 9—<S. A free kick to Ohakea hit the crossbar and from a. forward scramble Avery scored wide out., The kick failed. Ohakea- 31, Clydesdale S. Hazlewood next secured and ran round to score but his kick failed. Ohakea 14, Clydesdale 9. From a loose forward rush Walls scored and Ohaltea led 17—9. Hazlewood kicked high, followed up fast and, securing, ..kicked a beautiful goal. Ohakea 21, Clydesdale 9. Quinlan secured from a line out and scored. Ohakea 21, Clydesdale 12. Ohakea were penalised for offside play but Quinlan’s kick failed. Clydesdale almost scored again but time was called with the score Ohakea 21, Clydesdale 12. Mr. McDonell refereed. The cup was presented to the winners and the visitors entertained at afternoon tea. Miss E. Price, assistant at the school, has returned to duty after a severe attack of influenza. The school broke up for term holidays on Friday and resumes on September 4.
