Halcombe Military Sports

A fair attendance of the general public turned out on Monday (Anniversary Day) to witness the military sports which were held ou the Recreation Grounds. The non-appearance of the Palmerston North Garrison Band caused much disappointment. The cool weather conditions prevailing made racing a pleasure and was appreciated after tho extreme heat of last week. The heavy storm which visited our district on Sunday evening in nowiso spoilt the grounds, which were, in good order, and a most pleasant afternoon was spent. It is intended to make the function an annual one. Tbe following races were keenly contested:—

Girls’ race, 7 to 11 years: N. Wisltnowsky 1, McClay 2, Moira Hulton 3, Tilting tho ring: H. if- Blundeu 1, J. Dais 2. Tent-pegging: J. Dais 1, JKerrv 2. Single ladies’ race.: Miss F. Hughes L Miss Merritt 2. Boys, under 11 :°D. McNae 1, J- Williams. 2, K. Cowdrey 3. Girls, .11 to 14: Miss AVatson 1, Miss Garnett 2. Boys, under 14: B. Rylands 3, Jack Rasmussen 2, George Judd 3. Open jump: H. Bluuden 1, M. Garnett 2. Single . men’s race: J. Brady 1, D. Levy 2. Married ladies’ race: Mrs. R. Anderson 1, Mrs. J. Millar 2. Married men’s race: N. Cowdrey 1, N. Prior 2, K, Anderson 3. Tug-of-war on horseback: H. Blunden’s team 1; six teams competed. AVrestling on horseback: G. Robinson 1. ExServicemen’s race: J. Mills 1, G. Burgess 2. A r .C. race: J. Davies 1, J. Dais 2. Cigarette race: J. Davies 1, M. Garnett 2. Tug-of-war: D. Managh’s team 1; 7 teams competed. To complete the day’s enjoyment, a dance was held in the hall, when a fair crowd turned up. Extras were played by Miss M. Iwikau. After a dainty supper had been served, Mr.A. Hutton, on behalf of the local troops, thanked all present for their support, special thanks being due to those who had assisted with supper arrangements. The prizes for the various events competed for during the afternoon were then presented to the -winners. Messrs. H. Blunden and J. Dais ably carried out tbe duties of M.’sC. The sheepguessing competition was won by Mr. E. Johnski.
