Art Union is Not Wanted for Bowlers

PROPOSAL GIVEN MINORITY SUPPORT.

Although members were divided on the question, the Manawatu Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club turned down at its annual meeting last evening, a suggestion that kindred clubs in and around Palmerston North should combine in promoting an art union to raise money.

The proposal was sponsored by Mr. W. F. Cutler, who suggested that the Manawatu Bowling Centre be asked to inaugurate the art union. “If we can’t run a bowling club without holding an art union, we should give up,” commented Mr. W. Hunter.

The president (Mr. J. B. Gcrrand): “I’m against it too.” Mr. J. W. Robertson: “We could clean up our liabilities with an art union. Look at the money there is in it.” There was no sport outside bowling that had not been represented in an art union, he addpd. The method of raising money had come to stay and if the bowling clubs in Palmerston North could get an art union, they should do so.

It was pointed out that there would be no chance of getting an art union for three years as there were so many applications in already. The president said he was opposed to art unions in principle. It was derogatory to bowlers asking other people to pay for their sport. It was also undermining their independence and leaving things to chance. Mr. F. D. Smillre (secretary) said he was in favour of them, but knew that it would be a hard matter getting an art union out of the Department at present. There were about 120 applications in ahead, and further, the Minister was giving them very close examination.

Mr. Cutler characterised tho opposition to his proposal as weak. He suggested getting in tho queue. The motion was lost.
