The Australian Eugby team sailed for New Zealand by the Ulimaroa yesterday and had a rousing send-off. A man named W. G. Black, of Napier, who was in Palmerston North looking for work, was admitted to hospital last evening suffering from slight injuries received from being knocked down by a car in Boundary road. His condition late last night was reported to bo improved. “It would be a great reform if public works and other Government expenditure were cut down during boom periods and extended during times of depression,” said Mr. W. A. Gray in a discussion on State enterprise at a meeting of the Open Forum in Auckland. “The curtailment in the first place would serve to restrain the effect of the boom, while increased expenditure during the slump period would help to stabilise prices and provide productive employment for many thousands. We should learn to economise in prosperous times, when goods and services are dearer, and spend in times of depression.” When, at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club last evening, a statement was made that no dance would be a success unless the dances were all oldtime affairs, there was at once raised a storm of humorous protest from old and young alike. Various opinions were expressed, but generally speaking, the member who had been brave enough to ask that the jazz be cut out, found himself without a partner. “The young ones like the jazz,” commented a bowling stalwart, “and we old ones manage to get around somehow and enjoy it.” (Laughter.) A fifty-fifty old-time-jazz combination was more generally favoured.

Of special interest to parents, teachers, and scholars is' the Railway Department’s announcement in this issue that cheap tickets will be issued from 20th to 29th August inclusive, in connection with the spring school holidays. The tickets are available for return until 26th September, and can be purchased from railway offices at any time prior to travel date. Attention is also drawn to the fact that a family travelling together requires to pay only the (nice of three adult fares for father and mother and any number of their children under 16 years of age. These tickets are known as “Family Tickets,” and their popularity is apparent by the increased sales recorded in recent months. A GOOD FOUNDATION. Tho heifer calf may be quite successfully reared on calf meal only; but we recommend that a good foundation be laid on its mother's milk. The period on milk need not exceed ten days to a fortnight, then commence “Tui” Calf meal—as fine as flour and full of nourishment.
