Norsewood
The local Salvation Army held their annual Harvest Festival in the Army hall last Sunday. Mrs Ensign Knight of Wtaodville conducted the services and gave addresses suitable to the occasion. The hall was especially decorated with flowers ,fruit, ete., in keeping with the festival. In the Town hall on Monday night a varied programme of musical and other items was rendered by a party from Dannevirke under the leadership of Captain Wallace. At the conclusion of the programme a large amount of produce found ready sale by Dutch auction conducted by Capt. Wallace. A very excellent supper was then handed round and much appreciated by those present. The financial result is regarded ,as most satisfactory and all who assisted at the entertainment are to be. congratulated on the undoubted success of their efforts.
On Saturday afternoon the local Girl Guides gave a demonstration at which the girls' mothers were invited to be present. Quite a number attended. After welcoming the visitors Captain Mel drum expressed her pleasure at the interest being taken in the movement, and gave a most interesting address relative to the work the Guides arc engaged on. Games and old-time folk dances were indulged in by the girls and a demonstration of some of their work given. During the afternoon Lieut. Jean McCulloch, on behalf of her fellow guides, presented Capt. Meldrum with an Easter gift as an appreciation cf the work she is doing among them Afternoon tea was provided by the Guides. At the close of the afternoon exGuido mistress E. Brabazon thanked Capt. Meldrum and the Guides for the entertaining and instructive afternoon spent and wished the movement every success in the future. The following subscriptions to the Norsewood earthquake relief fund have been received: J. Hartnett 10s, school children (per Mr Gaze) £1 Os, Women's Institute £3 10s, making the total to date £156 8s Bd. The local branch of the Women's Institute held their annual meeting in the Institute Hall, South Norsewood, last Tuesday. Mrs Hans-Nielsen presiding over a good attendance of members. The elpgtipn of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs'Hans-Nielsen (reelected) ; vice-president, Mrs Harold Olsen (re-elected); secy., Mrs W. M. Thomson (re-elected); and the old committee was also re-elected for the ensuing year. The report and balance sheet were read and adopted and considered to be most .satisfactory. The sum of £3 10s from, the proceeds ,of the recent social and dance was voted to the Norsewood earthquake relief fund. Mrs A. F. Gulliford was the winner of a peg dressing competition which . created much amusement. Madame Lehmann of Napier, who is at present residing in Norsewood, delighted those present by her playing of several pianoforte selections. The hostesses for the afternoon, Mesdames F. J. Gaze and C. Logan, dispensed a most appetising afternoon tea at the conclusion .of the meeting. Mrs John Murphy and Miss Agnes Murphy of Te Whiti,.Norsewood, are on a holiday visit to friends in Otaki..
