Unemployed Labour.

During the month I have found work for over 50 unemployed men. This work has entailed considerable extra work in the office, besides the engineering part, laying out work. And we have to pay these workmen every Friday, which means practically the whole of Thursday and Friday is devoted to the unemployed work, so that we have been unable to keep up with our ordinary work. Our gang of the unemployed is on Maunga road, across the Manawatu river, going from Eaumati, and have practically made a new road for over £0 chains, at a cost of £lO5. A second gang is widening the road on the hill at what is known as the deviation near the four-mile peg, Weber road, at a cost of £6O 18s. A third gang is widening portion of Te White road, from its junction with NorsewoodOrniondville road and Arthur's road, at a cost of £4B 6s. The fourth gang is widening corners on main Waikopiro road, near Walter Williams' at a cost of £25 4s. The fiftli gang is widening a portion of Matamau-Makotuku road, at a cost of £46 18s. This makes a total expenditure .up to March 28 of £286 6s. Besides the widening of what is known as Holden's Hill, MatamauMakotuku road, which work was done with unemployed labour, but paid for on the £2 for £1 basis. The show the amount of work we are now handling, I may state that at present we have 118 men working in the county, made up as follows:- —Permanent hands, 23; casual, 13; unemployed labour, 50; contractors, 9; plus 23 men working for the contractors. As this county >:s had the sole use of my vacant section in Thyra street for the last 20 years free of cost for the storage of pipes, timber, machinery, etc., when required, I think now that pry has been reduced 20. pgr

cent, it is only right that the county should pay a rent for this section in the future. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Or. Castles, it was decided to fence deviation on a hill on the Dannevirke-Weber road. It was decided to renew the decking on the Pene Pene bridge, also to fence the approaches on tho Mangatera bridge. On tho motion of Cr. Castles, seconded by Cr. Hansen, it was decided to renew the decking on the Mangatewaiaui bridge. The report was then adopted. Cr. Hansen said he thought great credit was due to the engineer for the excellent manner in which the considerable amount of work had been car-j ried out under tho unemployment scheme. This had jpeant a good deal of extra work to tho staff and he moved that a vote of appreciation be accorded the staff. This was seconded by Cr. Castles and carried. It was decided on the motion, of Cr. Hansen, seconded by Cr. Frederickeon, to impose the 10 per cent, penalty 03j and after May 22.
