Bible Class Camp At Awapuni Racecourse

SPORTS AND CONCERT ON SATURDAY. Saturday proved to be a very busy day in the Hawke’s Bay-Manawatu. Youn|j Men’s Bible Class camp at present being conducted on the Awapuni racecourse at Palmerston .North. Although the day dawned dull for tho comprehensive sports programme which was to bo run off under tho guidance of the sports director, Mr Gilbert Read, the spirits the hundred odd young men ivdre by no means dampened and good entries were received for the majority of the events. The running was of a vOry high order throughout and some good finishes were witnessed by the large number of visitors at the camp, included in which were the Eev. W. A. Sinclair (Auckland), Eev. F. Copoland (Feilding), Reri Hocking, who is at present visiting his parents in Palmerston North, tho Rev. W. B. Pickering (Pahiatua) arid K-€v. R. Fordyce. (Aslihurst). In the evening the camp concert was held in the main stand when there was a good attendance of visitors who were treated to some firstclass items in a varied programme. Eev. J. D. McArthur, president of the Manawatu Young Men’s Bible Class Movement presented tlm certificates and the following trophies won during the sports:—Herbert Smith Trust Cup (junior), 100 yards, N. Ginn (Wanganui); A. Lobb (Feilding), run-ner-up; 440 yards, B. Court (Woodville), N. Ginn (Wanganui), runner-up; long jump, N. Ginn (Wanganui); B. Court (Woodville), runner-up; Cup to winner of most points in all three events, N. Ginn (Wanganui); medal for senior camper gaining most points in all events, L. Spurdle (Hastings); medal for junior camper gaining most points in all events, W. G. Jones (Hastings); Manawatu Union points prize Cup: senior, G. Read (Feilding); junior, B. Court (Woodville); Hawke’s Bay Stanley Jones Memorial Cups: senior, L. Spurdle (Hastings); junior, W. G. ' One mile walk: Oxbrow 1, R. Finnemore 2, N. Tucker 3. The Concert. The, recently formed Palmerston North City Band made its first appearance in public under the conductorship of Mr. J. B. Thomson and performed most creditably contributing the following items: National Anthem; hymn, “The Churches’ One Foundation’’; two-step, “High Jinks’’; waltz, “Nada’’; march, “Peace and Plenty,’’ “Old Hundred.’’ Other items were guitar solos, Alan Sundborn; elocutionary items, Frank Berry; vocal duet, Norman Shelton and Herrie Harford; recitation, Tom Rainforth; humour, Mr. F. Gibbs; violin solos, R. Hutchens; concerted item, Wanganui camp. The proceedings closed with the singing of the “Doxology.’’ Community singing was heartily indulged in prior to the evening performance. Sunday’s programme, On Sunday morning the day was opened with study circles after which the camp retired to the meeting room whore the morning service was conducted by Mr. R. H. Billens. Mr. H. Harford presided and welcomed the speaker, who he referred to as an old camper and was given an enthusiastic reception. Mr. Billens based his remarks on 1 Corinthians, chapter 15, speaking most forcefully on the importance of Easter and tho Resurrection as the foundation of Christianity. In the evening tho Rev. J. D. McArthur conducted tho most important service in connection with the Easter camp that of Sunday evening at the conclusion of which the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper was partaken of.
