SERVICE CAR AND MOTOR BUS COLLIDE IN BUSINESS AREA

Young Lady in Hospital SMALLER VEHICLE IS OVERTURNED As tho result of a violent collision between a sixteen-seater motor bus and a service car at the intersection of Rangitikei street and the Square at 12.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon, several passengers were obliged to se<k attention for superficial injuries and Miss Nora Nottingham, aged 25, of Christchurch, was admitted to the public hospital suffering from \ shock, concussion and general injuries. The accident occurred at a busy corner during tho midday rush hour and tv as witnessed by many people, who were horrified to sec the lighter of the two vehicles roll over on to its side only a few yards from the entrance to Messrs Goldfinch and Cousins’ establishment. The service car. a Hudson of heavy tvpo used on the Wanganui run and tho property of Messrs Vernon and Martin, was approaching the corner from tho direction of the weighbridge with the intention of proceeding along Rangitikei street when tho large Stewart bus, belonging to the Stewart Motor Company, Napier, was turning in the same direction after coming from the eastern side of tho Square. The impact was a terrific one, tho crash being heard in all parts of the business area. With a rending of steel and a smashing of glass the vehicles met and the service car, carrying three passengers, turned or or and came to rest on its side while tho bus stopped upright a few yards further on. Peculiarly enough it was not those travelling in tho overturned car who suffered serious injury although they were bruised and badly cut by flying glass. Miss Nottingham, who was subsequently removed to hospital, was a passenger in tho Napicr-Wcllington bus and in tho same vehicle were Mrs J James and Mrs M. Brodio, of Napier, both of whom escaped with shock. The driver, Mr Harold L. Lucena, received minor cuts. A youth, Peter Korev, of Hastings, was ono of the passengers in the service car to receive minor cuts, while another man was badly gashed on the leg and hand. His clothes were also torn considerably. Both machines were extensively damaged and a large crowd gathered before the cars were removed by breakdown gangs. Tho radiator of the bus received tho full force of the impact and together with the engine was badly twisted. The windscreen and some of the side windows were shattered while it appears as though the chassis has been affected by the collision. The scrvico car, which was hit on the side, was also dented and twisted, a tyre having been knocked off and the running boards broken. All the glass was smashed and, to see the service car lying on its side it appeared a miracle that nobody was more seriously injured.
