Bronze Medals to Celebrate the Advent of the New City

OR. MANSFORD’S SUGGESTION. The question of celebrating the declaration of Palmerston North as a city was briefly referred to at last right’s meeting of the Palmerston North City Council when it was decided, on the suggestion of Cr. M. A. Eliott, to call a conference on September 1 of bodies and associations interested, to discuss what form the celebrations should take. Cr. Eliott thought that tho following bodies should be asked to send delegates:— lvahranga County Council, Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, Retailers Association, Mauawatu A. and P. Association, Manawatu Racing Club, Farmers’ Union, various sports bodies, Manawatu Automobile Association and Rotary Club. The celebrations, he thought should not cost much and everybody was sure to enter wholeheartedly into the matter. Cr Mansford asked if it would be possible to have a bronze medal struck for school children. He remembered getting one a,s a boy at school and had treasured it. The Mayor: The suggestion is worth looking into. The council also agreed that a plate or slab commemorating the event and the recent jubilee, be set in the vacant place on th memorial in the fountain reserve.
